The Hobbit Chapter 1

"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort."

Hello everyone! I am glad to announce that this is the first segment in a new series! Graeme Straughn and I will be building each chapter of the Hobbit in LEGO on a 16x16! This will be a weekly project, where we will alternate each week. So check out his page next week for Chapter 2! This is something we've both wanted to do for a while now, and here it is! I'm very excited, and can't wait to continue building!

Surprisingly this build proved to be a bigger challenge than I had anticipated. A Hobbit-Hole is hard to build on a 16x16, but it turned out half way decent! Though I'm not a fan of the olive green.

I've been missing lots of great sunsets lately. There were three good ones just this week that I was either too busy or too tired to shoot. But a few weeks ago I did manage to get out for some shooting on a nice Sunday evening. Mt Tamalpais was the destination and fog was the target. I wasn't expecting much of a sunset, so it was a nice bonus to get a bit of golden light, especially as the sun started poking through some of the lower clouds on its way toward the horizon. I think I mentioned it with the last photo I posted, but the fog really is mesmerizing to watch; it seems to have a life of its own and purpose to its movement.

I wrapped up a six-month project at work this week. I didn't realize how much it was stressing me out until I completed the final task on Wednesday night. Now I feel positively carefree! That feeling will fade on Monday when I will start the next project but I'm going to really enjoy relaxing 100% this weekend. The only thing on my to-do list is to clip my dog's fur -- it's time for her summer cut. And yes, I do it myself, and I do about a C+/B- job on it...most times :)

Happy weekend, friends!

Southern Alps, New Zealand.

The Southern Alps (Māori: Kā Tiritiri o te Moana) are a mountain range extending along much of the length of New Zealand's South Island, reaching its greatest elevations near the island's western side.

The range runs 500 km north to south. The tallest peak is Aoraki / Mount Cook, the highest point in New Zealand at 3,724 metres (12,218 ft) and there are sixteen other points that exceed 3,000 metres (9,800 ft) in height. The mountains are cut through with glacial valleys and lakes.

The Southern Alps lie along a geological plate boundary, part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, with the Pacific Plate to the southeast pushing westward and colliding with the northward-moving Indo-Australian Plate to the northwest.

Fossá, Faroes' highest waterfall, on the east side of Streymoy.

Connected to Víkarvatn lake high on the hills of the Vatnfelli peak above the road, the Fossá river falls majestically and precipitously from a heigh of about 140 m over two rocky outcrops before passing under the bridge carrying the route 594 and finally reaching the waters of Sundini sound.

Mûmak of Harad - Lord of the Rings

Finally finished! This build took me around 4 months to finish and I'm happy to have it done.

Mumakil or Oliphaunts were huge elephant like beasts that featured prominently in the battle of Pelennor Fields in the Return of the King. Ive built this referencing the movies version the best I could follow, along with some creative liberties of course.

I'll be displaying this at the Christchurch Brickshow in July if you would like to come and see it in person.

For the Brickvention. Nearly done, waiting on some parts to finish off a few things. I feel the need to add more trees but I'm surprised that even with something this large I ran out of space for any more.

I'm really looking forward to seeing everyone next week and checking out all of the amazing creations at Brickvention this year!

Title taken from the wonderful Brian Eno album of the same name.

This one of my first attempts at a large night panorama.

It's made up of 13 vertical images. Each image was shot with my Sony a6000 and Samyang 12mm lens. ISO 2000, f/2, 15 sec.

I have some slightly longer exposure shots of the milky way that are a litttle more detailed. I wanted to keep the exposure time down just a little to make it stitch together easier. I had to edit out some serious power lines. Overall, I'm pleased with the result.

The sunrise abounds in colors reminding me of the books by J.R.R. Tolkien.

There is debate or some such about having a landscape image sharp from the front to the back. But as Nick Page pointed out in one of his vids if you want to create a 2D effect of the background receding into the distance that can't happen. It must seem to be far away which on a image that is sharp all the way by focus stacking etc still is one dimensional. So with a easily recognisable land mark such as Mount Ngauruhoe its not hard to throw the background into a hazy feel to generate the 2D effect and the viewer still recognising the mountain and it still being part of the visual story. Like just being there on a hazy day.

Anyway just throwing that out there...

As a side note i never post full resolution images on the web anywhere so the image is of a lower quality in general.

It was time for a little nonsense ;-)

I saw a picture of this place a long time ago and immediately marked its location n the map, sort of a “wish list” type of deal. I knew I wanted to visit this slot canyon during the fall colors, but things never worked out. Finally, this year I planned a trip to the northeast of USA for some of its famous fall color action. The weather this year has been really odd, so fall colors were really late. This worked out in my favor because I couldn’t make the trip during the “usual” fall color time frame.

I started the hike into the slot canyon while it was still pitch black. I wanted to get to this waterfall before the light becomes harsh and to beat the crowd. The plan didn’t work out that way though. Every bend in the slot canyon had something interesting to shoot, so my progress up the slot canyon was pretty slow.

Eventually I made my way below the Rainbow Falls. Luckily, I still had enough time to frame my shot and took a few pictures before the sun came out. This shot was taken while it is still fairly dark, but enough light was coming through the canyon to light up the waterfall. I used my newly purchased Lee 6-stop little stopper here to lengthen the exposure time and let the sensor soak up the saturated fall color.

Part 4

As beautiful and as powerful as this place is, the clouds that held the peaks made me anxious for possible rain since I had not prepared my camp for such weather. I would have stayed here longer to just sit and enjoy the energy of the place in quite contemplation and mediation, but I decided I had to head back and get my stuff ready for any weather that may come. So after thanking the flowers, peaks and glacier I gathered my pack and began the journey back over the pass.

The earth sloped up and the tarn fell away as I climbed out of the cirque. The immense landscape to the south began to appear out from behind the hill that I was climbing; jagged peaks and steep spires vanishing into thick, dark clouds; crooked ridges and jumbled, rolling hills forming labyrinths. I played around with different foregrounds of large boulders and lonely shrubs until finally I saw a small, shimmering tarn that I liked the best.

From here I continued up the steep slope to the top of the ridge and followed that until I reached the pass, the howling wind waiting there to greet me. I hid myself from it's cold breath under a short stunted pine and called home. Atop every pass and peak I had cell signal so long as I could see the summit of Mammoth Mountain, but within the furrows and folds of the earth I was cut off from the outside world, as it should be when out here.

I was lucky and got my hands on three CMF series 20 viking minifigs the last few days. I love how versatile this minifig‘s parts are.

Lake-town

Lake-town (Esgaroth)- small settlement and community of Men East of Mirkwood in the north eastern part of Middle-earth. The town stands upon wooden pillars sunk into the bed of the Long Lake.

As for me, scenes going in Lake-town are most interesting and epic in the Desolation of Smaug. So I've made a scene when Bard the Bowman runs from guards of Lake-town.

Thanks for viewing!

Built for round 2 of MELO where the prompt was to make a 16x16 vignette that represents one of the free people of Middle Earth. I got the Dwarves category. So I was thinking, what defines the Dwarves? The result ended up being a cave that features digging, mithril, blacksmith, dwarven weapons and architecture (namely Erebor) and the arkenstone. This build was a bit of a challenge. First, I knew I was gonna be away for most of the tournament so this had to be done in the first 1,5 days which definitely got stressful. Second, I realized I had much less sand green than I thought, and there was no time for BrickLink orders. But with all things considered, I'm happy with the end results!

A beautiful morning spent mooching round Padley Gorge this morning and even brought the troops with me. Up at 6 and out the door by half past.

50 minutes later we arrived at Padley which was enveloped in the thickest mist I've ever seen. Lauren and Riley were very kind and stood about whilst I ran around like a daftie amongst the Sessile Oaks.

I settled in this one of a couple of trees clinging to the side of the gorge.

Within a few minutes the mist had all but gone and we made our way back up the hill, crossed the road and had sausage butties and a coffee at the cafe on the Longshore Estate.

A beautiful way to start our day.
