Probably the most famous open gas station in Southern California, this station was initially designed to be part of the theme building at LAX. How it ended up as a gas station in Beverly Hills, I don't know. Incredible architecture.

Recently demolished. Don't know if the sign's going to be destroyed as well.

As seen in Rue Magazine.

Another view of the Stanley piece. The panels move and and the pulls are a cool spade shape. This is a part of a two-piece set--repurposed the credenza part as a media center.

I thought I’d catch this moment before it all disappears. These are listed buildings.

I have been working on this set for years...just kidding. It just seems that way. It's a rather labor intensive project, and I just couldn't find enough time to work on it very much, while working four days a week, unless I didn't sleep to do it. Considering that it involved using my chop saw, I didn't think that was a good idea. ;)

When people think of American cities with great Architecture, they don’t think of Denver.

Until WWII was over, most of the buildings around the metropolitan region were inspired by traditional, classical, and Victorian ideals.

There was a huge building boom along the front range in the post war years. It was fueled by veterans who had passed through during the war and by the threat of nuclear war with the Soviet Union. When Russia got the bomb, it seemed a good idea to move some of the essential functions of government to somewhere more safe than Washington DC. Metro Denver was out of range of any Russian missile until the 1960s. The government already owned land where the Remington company had made munitions throughout the war. Soon, important agencies like Weights and Standards and the USGS moved mile high. Not long after that, the aerospace industry followed.

The boom that resulted brought architects like I.M. Pei to town. Across the region, there was an openness towards what would become known as Mid-Century Modern.

As development pressure increased in recent years, the bulldozer took many a Mid-Century treasure before the public grew to appreciate what we scraped. Case in point would be the loss of I.M.Pei’s local masterpiece, the Hyperbolic Paraboloid. City Council allowed a hotel chain to scrape the building and replace it with a box that holds the bar.

So far, this building along the US 6 frontage road, survives.

After leaving Corona, we headed out to Palm Springs to see Joe's side of the family. We must have gained about 10 pounds that day eating, well, like my dad's family. That night, we stayed at a beautiful, old 50s motel near Palm Springs that had been completely refurbished but kept it's original style. Like stepping into a timewarp to the 40s or 50s. Palm Springs is famous for great, little Modern places like this.

A couple of finds from a visit home over the weekend, hopefully we'lll be rehoming them soon.

Several years ago, I woke up in the middle of the night, having dreamed about a headboard. I drew this headboard on a scrap of paper, and went back to sleep. When I woke up, I was half surprised to see it there. I'd almost forgotten that I drew it. Last year, I sketched it out on Paint in Windows, and then broke my arm. I finally decided to tackle the project, and it's a huge pain in the...
