Stem cells play important role in cell-based strategy for tissue regeneration. However, the conventional 'petri dish' based cell cultures do not truly replicate the complex 3D environments where cells naturally grow. In the Stupp laboratory, we are using photolithography to create textured surfaces that induce single stem cells to self-aggregate into microtissue. Compared to single stem cells, these aggregates are much more potent for regenerative medicine once implanted into the body. These specific cells will be used to grow new spinal bone.

In this image, microwells (light pink) of agarose gel were created using lithography, then each well was seeded with 250 stem cells (purple). These stem cells do not adhere to the microwell gel, but instead, they self-assembled together into microaggregates within 24 hours. The cells respond to this more natural environment by producing extracellular matrix (red) like collagen and proteoglycans. To our knowledge, this is the first ever SEM image of periosteal stem cells self-aggregating.

A little late to the party. Just finished a hard week at school; now I have a little break until finals. Thought I should probably try a micro GARC. I love GARC and I've made some GARC racers in the past so it was fun to do a mini one. Unfortunately none of the stickers sheets I have here at school have number stickers :/ I'll add one when I get home.

At this scale, anything starts to look quite amazing :)

Here's a fun micro excavator I made from only 49 pieces.

Been messing about with a bit of microscale steampunk and came up with these tablescrap builds. Not much "punk" in them, but still a touch of clank.

Considering trying to build a 20s-era microscale dockfront area using this sort of stuff. We'll see...

It's a pity insect repellent and fly swatters don't work in space. Racing with the agility of a fly, this little speed demon bugs everyone. With unequaled prestige on the race-course (as shown by its daunting victory tallies) this GARC flies for only the king of sponsors: LEGO®

Here's my contribution to Simon and Jacob's fantastic Micro GARC campaign. I've seen so many micro masterpieces thus far, I couldn't resist pitching in my own humble attempt for the BrickWorld 2014.

Soli Deo Gloria!

My take on Exo-Force set 7708 for Brickset's 60 Years of the Brick microscale competition.

The Tantive IV was the last and biggest ship on my micro scale to-do list. Its close to the size of set 75244 but I’ve aimed to give it a lot more detail and accuracy. I've done my best to make sure each hull section is the right size and proportions with as much detail as possible.

The modular hull sections are connected to an internal Technic frame. The ship is strong, pretty easy to pick up (as long as you avoid those fins) and rests firmly on a small stand which can easily be made taller or a different colour. Inside the Technic frame is the ship interior and crew! The two roof sections can be removed to reveal the main corridor which connects the cockpit to the docking bays near the engines. The upper deck also comes off to show a central conference room with engineering corridors and removable escape pods either side. The 4-stud high crew and interior features aren’t to scale sadly, but hopefully they stand out as a nice extra feature for the ship!

This was by far the biggest and heaviest moc I’ve attempted so far, it was a new challenge for me but I really enjoyed the process. I’ve put instructions for this and the Liberator colour scheme on Rebrickable (link below), and thrown in the Millennium Falcon, Ghost and plenty of Rebel Starfighters in the hope that someone likes it enough to make a little Rebel fleet :)

Nice weather in Portland is rarely wasted.

Not too bad considering I only have one functional hand at the moment (left) and I’m right hand dominant.

Check out my micro space shuttle with stand. I know small shuttles have been done before by many other people, but I still wanted to give it a try. After a number of previous attempts, I finally have one I like.

As if Brickville wasn't small enough, above are micro versions of Brickville's seven tallest buildings. The total piece count is 243.

did the bottle just blow into the patch of melted water? Or did it help create it by altering the micro-climate? waves? shelter? warmth? little greenhouse? How does it affect the plants and creatures around it?

The Agents Mobile Command Center is an awesome set as you all probably know. The only downside is, so to speak, that it stretches the term "minifig scale" really really far. 12 studs wide, to be precise. Since all the other trucks in minifig scale are 6-wide, I figured a 1:2 scale model of the set had to blend just fine into LEGO City.

Obviously, it didn't turn out quite as expected. Now I have a truck that barely fits a minifig and is otherwise pretty useless. On the other hand: Micro-Agents! Woot!

After that, I couldn't stop...

Micro garc , couldn't wait to take a better picture, felt i had to post it now :-)

This is basically a failed, uncompleted attempt at creating a skyline for "Solo: A Star Wars Story" - it's just too big! I reverse engineered the Conveyex Transport design from an excellent MOC I saw on the Eurobricks forum (username: obijon); however, I realized too late that the scale became too large to incorporate into a proper "skyline" design.

This build also incorporates some Lego math. Matching Lego bricks at angles is tricky since they don't align most of the time. The train track is angled slightly at one of those rare intersections!

Instructions for some of my builds can be accessed here.

Nikon Micro-NIKKOR 55mm f2.8 Ai-S.

I wanted to scope out an old Nikon lens, and a Nikon guy recommended this lens as the best one to try first. (Either this or a 105mm f2.5 Ai-S, or one of the f1.2's).

It's a 1:2 lens, despite the name implying a greater magnification. I've got a PK-13 extension tube designed for the lens. It gives the lens a 1:1 magnification, but a rather bulky feel.

This photo was taken with a MIR-1 and a simple extension tube. I've finally cleaned the inside of the MIR, and it's as sharp stopped down as people say.

I'll be interested to see how the Micro-NIKKOR performs; it has a strong reputation among Nikon shooters.
