The life of the Chatal workers is limited to the boundaries of the Chatal. They have no separate life, no dreams. Their lives are spent working hard all day. No adequate rest, no recreation. To the Chatal owner they are much like maids. After working so hard for a low wage, they can't put a smile on anyone's face in their family, so they are always mentally depressed & upset. This is how it is passed down through the generations.
From children to older women, people of all ages work in the Chatal. There is nothing entertaining in their lives after a day of inhuman toil, yet they laugh, grumble at each other. They know this is their life, they have to find their happiness from here.
চাতালকর্মীদের জীবন চাতালের গণ্ডির মধ্যেই সীমাবদ্ধ। তাদের আলাদা কোন জীবন নেই, নেই কোন স্বপ্ন। সারাদিন হাড়ভাঙ্গা পরিশ্রম করেই তাদের জীবন যায়। নেই পর্যাপ্ত বিশ্রাম, নেই কোন বিনোদনের ব্যবস্থা। মালিকদের কাছে তারা অনেকটা দাসীর মতো। স্বল্প মজুরীতে এতো পরিশ্রমের পরো তারা তাদের সংসারে কারো মুখে হাসি ফোটাতে পারে না, ফলে তারা সবসময় মানসিকভাবে বিপর্যস্ত থাকে।
শিশু থেকে বয়স্ক নারী সব বয়সের মানুষ কাজ করে চাতালে। সারাদিনের অমানবিক পরিশ্রমের পর তাদের জীবনে বিনোদনের কিছুই নেই, তারপরও তারা হাসে, একে অপরের সাথে খুনসুটি করে। তারা জানে এটাই তাদের জীবন, এখান থেকেই তাদের আনন্দ খুঁজে নিতে হবে ।
বাজারে চাউলের যোগান দিতে ঢেঁকি নির্ভরতা থেকে চাতালে ধান শুকানোর জন্য অভ্যস্থ হতে থাকে। ব্যবহার বাড়তে থাকে চাতালের। দিন যেয়ে দিন এসে ঢেঁকি বিকল হয়ে প্রচলন আসে হাসকিং মিলের। এই মিলে চাতালের ব্যপক ব্যবহার হতে থাকে। এই মিলে দেশের স্থানীয় ধনীক শ্রেনী, বড় বড় ব্যবসায়ীরা বিনিয়োগ করতে লাগলেন। দেশের আনাচে কানাচে হাসকিং মিল তৈরী হলো। চাতাল তখন মানুষের খুব কাছে পৌছে গেল। যে কারণে দেশে এখন প্রায় ৪০০ টি হাসকিং মিল আছে বলে জানা যায়। যদিও এই মিল মালিকেরা এখন এই মিলের ডিজিটাল সংস্করণ হিসেবে অটো রাইচ মিলের দিকে ঝুকছে। অনেকে হাসকিং মিলের ব্যবসা থেকে নিজেকে গুটিয়েও নিয়েছে। অটো মিলে চাতালের তেমন ব্যবহার নেই বললেই চলে। ধান থেকে চাউলের যে কারবার তা ঘরে ঘরে ঢেঁকি থেকে হাসকিং মিল এবং তা থেকে অটো রাইচ মিলে এসে ঠেকেছে। কাঠের ঢেঁকির ধান কল আজ অটো মিলে রূপান্তরীত হতে গিয়ে মিলে পরিণত হয়েছে।
হাসকিং মিল এবং চাউলের চাতালের সাথে জড়িয়ে আছে মধ্যম ও নি¤œ মধ্যম শ্রেণীর মানুষের রুটি-রুজির বিষয়টি। দেশের বিপুল সংখ্যক হতদরিদ মানুষের খাদ্য নিরাপত্তার বিষয়টি আজ জড়িয়েছে হাসকিং মিলের চাউল উৎপাদনের প্রয়োজনে। দিন বদলে হাসকিং বদলে যাচ্ছে। আসছে অটো রাইচ মিল। অটো রাইচ মিলের দাপটে মানুষ শ্রম হারাচ্ছে। আবার বিলুপ্ত হচ্ছে ঢেঁকি শিল্পের। ঘরে ঘরে এখন আর ঢেঁকি পাঁড়ের শব্দ যেমন শোনা যায় না। আবার মেয়েদের গানের সুরে সুর মিলিয়ে চাউল কোটার সংস্কৃতিও মিলে যাচ্ছে দিন দিন।
চাতালের শ্রমিকদের মধ্যে পুরুষের পাশাপাশি নারীদের সংখ্যা নিতান্তই কম নয়। তবে এখানে নারীরা পরিশ্রম বেশি করে কম মজুরী পেয়ে থাকে।

Brenizer Method - 17 shots

This was my first attempt at the "Brenizer Method". I think it turned out pretty good. I love the DOF and wide angle feel you're able to achieve with such a long lens. I'll definitely be using this more, maybe even in weddings and other events.
I took this picture at my sister's house where she always has at least two feeders out and attracts large quantities of hummingbirds.
Lighting stuff: I learned the lighting that I used here from a book by Linda Robbins called The Hummingbird Guide. Her method is to use a minimum of 5 to 6 strobes, a supplied background, and photograph the birds in the shade so that you don't have to overpower the sunlight. When you use multiple strobes on a subject in the shade you can use lower power settings for each flash which results in shorter flash durations which means it freezes the wing blur. The backdrop is a painting my wife did for this purpose. I used 6 Yongnuo strobes because I wanted to use identical manual power output for each flash . One strobe was pointed at the background, one was underneath the feeder, and the other 4 strobes surrounded the feeder. The strobes were all at around 1/32nd power, in manual mode, and were triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603N., and you can see the EXIF info on the side. This method is the only way that I've been able to photograph one of these birds with little, or no, wing blur. I've finally learned to pre-focus on a spot near the feeder, using Live View, so that the birds are usually all in focus. I can then sit farther away from the feeder and trigger the strobes and the camera remotely. Down below in the first comment, you can see a picture of the setup that I used on that particular day.

A small break from my Minifigure photography :)
My previous method included using small ziplock bags and small drawers. This new method is much easier as its less stuff that I have to take out each time when I'm building and now they are sorted by category. I'm still using the other methods but slowly I will phase them out as I manage to get more of these. I need to purchase more parts for my MOCs, as most builders know; no matter how many parts you own you still won't have the right piece in the right colour or quantity :)
I use the 'Really Useful Box 4 Litre' and 'Really Useful Organiser Tray 4 Litre.'

I was asked by Untold Method to contribute to their ongoing collaborative comic/graphic novel. This is the 5th page of the comic, and I was given all the dialogue and guidelines for the story. I did it using my typical technique of India ink on paper. This is pretty much my first attempt at working on a comic, but hopefully not my last. We'll see.......

Main story
There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.
One # to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.
The other # to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days # staring at the shine
quietly.
Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.
I face myself to change tomorrow # a vague day into something certain.
That is the meaning of a rebirth.
I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left # I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However # I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous # unstable
tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.
Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

あらすじ
大学を目指している北見ケイは、SNS上で、6歳年上のイベントコンパニオン、上村香織に出会う。
上京してきた香織の夢は、有名なアーティストの友達になるためだ。
そのためにはラジオ局のプロデューサー、大沢亮の存在が必要だった。
大沢は、ラジオの生放送中、香織へ語りかける。
「僕には妻子がある。しかし、僕は君に会いたいと思っている」
ケイの同級生で、彼を想っている三條里香は、香織の動向を探っていた。。。。。
本編
人が海へ向かう理由には、二つある。
ひとつは、波打ち際ではしゃぐ子供のように、今の瞬間の海の輝きを楽しむこと。
もうひとつは、その輝きを静かに見据えて、過ぎ去った日々を懐かしむ老人のように記憶の埃を払うこと。
二つは重なり合わないようではあるけれども、たったひとつの意味しか生まない。
再生だ。
明日っていう、曖昧な日を確実なものへと変えてゆくために、自分の存在に向き合う。
それが再生の意味だ。
十八歳だった僕には大切な人がいた。

Nestled in the Balkans and draped in a fine powder of snow, the sovereign nation of Modora has survived for nearly four hundred years. It survived the great ravages of a Vandal Savage on the warpath, stood strong through innumerable winters, and joined the resistance when it was taken by Nazi forces during World War Two.
And although it had seen better days, the small nation still managed to crawl along. It’s inhabitants were content, and its economy stabilizing.
It would be astounding however, it Modora survived what happened next.
The green light we’ve all come to expect tears through the atmosphere, and dissipates in the cobblestone Modora streets. In its wake stands six figures in outlandish costumes. Their presence causes confused glances from the passerby.
Sonar: Ah, what is the expression? Home is the sweetest home?
Answer, behind him, still struggles in the grips of the Multiplexes.
Answer: Sure, if you’re an invalid.
Sonar turns and smiles. He takes a few steps towards Answer.
Sonar: Ah, our delightful Mister Answer. Welcome to my home. What do you think?
Answer spits: Looks like every other stick-built pile of mud the Europeans are so well known for.
Angle-Man: Who’s being racist now, eh?
Sonar: Quiet please, Bend.
Answer: You may as well just kill me now metalfingers, otherwise I promise to you I’ll be nothing but hell in a handbasket.
Sonar laughs: No, no. For now you remain alive. It is not that I need you, it is that you shall serve as the first public execution under my new rule. Mister Black, please release him. He can do no harm here. However, If he tries anything, do tear him limb from limb.
At this he ascends, rising up into the air above the ancient, shingled rooves. Below, Angle-Man, Agent Orange, and Multiplex watch him rise. The Answer however, glances briefly at Hypnota, and strokes his chin once. Hypnota strokes her own false beard once in return.
Above the rooftops, Sonar takes in the crisp mountain air, extends his arms, smiles, then releases a resounding shriek from the devices in his fingertips. The sound rattles beams, shatters windows, and causes ears to bleed. Somewhere in the distance, an avalanche plummets down a cliffside and crushes an old man’s cabin, sweeping him into sharp rocks.
In the throne room of the Modoran palace, a stained glass window, as old as the nation itself, depicting the great hero Sir Sheldrake slaying the great elder dragon shatters into infinitesimal pieces over Lord Fando’s head.
Fando brushes the glass from his hair. He knows exactly what this means. He’s been keeping up with American news. He knows exactly who’s here. And he does not want him living. Fando calls for his captain of the guard, and waits a full three minutes for him to clomp into the throne room. Madly, wildly, Fando begins to shout orders at him, until finally, the captain obliges and clomps back out. Steaming, Fando returns to his quarters and readies for battle.
On the streets, passerby have begun to flee in panic. Sonar descends again.
Sonar: Now, we are here to retake the throne of Modora. The throne that rightfully belongs to me. You will do as I say, and go where I point. Any disobedience, and you will be without head. And Mister Answer, do try and keep alive.
Answer grimaces under his mask, but uncharacteristically, says nothing. His silence throws Sonar off for a second, but the sounds of gunfire and the soft pat of bullets embedding themselves in the nearby building brings him back around.
Sonar: Please, for the sake of myself and your own health, try not to damage the buildings.
At that, Multiplex expands into six more of himself, three of which catch bullets. The Squad behind him bolts in all directions, and before he knows it, he’s diving into an alley. He knew he shouldn’t have tried to swipe those diamonds, he just couldn’t help himself, and now, thanks to Firestorm and his own lack of impulse control, he had an arm with a third degree burn, a bomb in his neck, and he was here in this random micro-town in the middle of nowhere. He hadn’t even checked to see if that permanent brand old hot-head had gave him extended to his dupes, and frankly, he was afraid to find out. Instead, he just sat in the corner, pumping out dupes after dupe as Sonar shouted overhead for more manpower. Danton Black’s life was one long string of regrets, and being here was certainly one of them. He shuddered every time another of him died.
Agent Orange’s eyes light up in fire. He watches has the thatch and bamboo huts go up in flame. Screaming children, thick little fists covering their eyes, roll in the steaming mud as women weep and bawl, and men shriek in pain, their limbs burned off by liquid heat. Behind him, the apaches strafe the tree line, causing the palm trees to go up in a molten ball of chemical death. He grins and clicks his flamethrower to life. Casually, he lights a wounded Vietcong on fire, and sighs contentedly as the man shrieks and his skin sizzles. Somewhere, someone is shouting for more water, more whiskey, more water, and another man wants to go surfing. Agent Orange does not miss California, and does not miss his friends. The coast life was never for him. But this stage, this theater of war, was everything he’d ever need.
Angle-Man ports forward, glad he at least brought a knife which rapidly finds itself embedded in the blue-uniformed chest of a Modoran solider. He ports just to the left so another is riddled with his own comrades’ bullets. He’s thrilled, honestly. Thrilled that he’s made it this long. That he never lost more than those two fingers. Thrilled that finally, finally his time served on this godforsaken outfit payed off. When Wladon had offered him this deal after that mess with that Witch woman, he was all too eager to accept. He expected it to happen sooner, but he understood why Wladon didn’t want Lawton or Harkness along. The bastards. Bend for one was glad to be rid of them. Two soldiers are sliced in half by his angle, and another gets the bullet treatment himself. It’s an old method, but tried and true. Yes, Bend was thrilled to be rid of Lawton and Harkness. Thrilled to be released from Waller’s iron grasp. Bend was looking forward to ruling this country.
The shells and bullets, and the one tank the Modoran Soldiers employed, were not unfamiliar to Hypnota. She was surprised that a nation of this size only had one tank, but she was also thankful. Another shell imploded to the right of her, and snapped her back to that crackling, resounding sound that took her brother. She touched her fingers to her head briefly, and sent a pulsating force through it quickly to move the memories past. She had to stop doing that, she noted, or the damage would be irreparable. Behind her, The Answer was cursing violently and creatively and nursing a bullet wound to the left shoulder. It was not the worst she had seen. As loud as he was, he would be all right. They nodded to each other, then Hypnota darted from her hiding place, blasting psychic waves towards a few nearby soldiers. She grimaced as the soldiers all turned and shot each other in the head. When oh when, she wondered, would all the violence end.
Sonar laughs aloud has he bursts the eardrums and shatters the brain matter of all the gunmen around him. He feels a hint of remorse, these were his subjects, his personal guard after all, and it was a shame to spill Modoran blood, but they were traitors, lapdogs of Fando, and thus, they had to be put down. Out of the corner of his eye, he catches Hypnota leap onto the army’s tank, and suggest the soldiers open the hatch, to which they oblige. To his left, Bend and Aparo burn and slash through the guards, and all around him, Multiplex surges through the streets. He breathes in the harsh smoke of battle, then rises towards the remains of a once magnificent stained-glass window. A hail of bullets explodes towards him, but he bats them away with pure sound. Gently, he lands on his tip-toes, then begins to strut forward, and with a horrid set of screeches, explodes the heads of Fando’s guards with pure shockwaves of sound.

Sonar blasts the weapons from his hands, then grabs Fando’s head between his own.

With one last resounding sound, Fando’s head is crushed by solid sound waves., his final terrified scream drowned out by Sonar’s exhausted apparatuses.
Sonar takes a deep, exhausted breath as Fando’s near-headless body crumples to the floor. He is Sonar no longer as he approaches the throne. He is Bito Wladon, ruler of Modora.
And now none would stand in the way of his rule.

So turns out those little scraps that come with daggers and such fit pretty well into zamor spheres!

A special Pittwater flashback in this picture, with one of the old Isuzu side loaders I used to see as a kid during school holidays. Someone told me these bodies were custom made for URM, and as far as I know they were only used in Pittwater for bottles recycling. They were also pretty cool and unique in the dark blue colour amongst the other trucks in the fleet. I’m not sure how many of these were operated by the company, but in the early 2000s this collection vehicle was succeeded by a regular JP6 Merc rear loader and after that came the factory fresh JP5 Ivecos. These trucks were equipped with a comb lifter for the 240L bins from the units as seen and only now it pops into my mind that it may have been a Formark arm. There was a very distinct sound and timing of the squeaking lifter, clamp locking the bin lip, the bin wheels hitting the hopper roof and the subsequent crash/clatter of bottles. Emptying the crates from houses involved holding them over the top of your head with two hands and jumping up to “throw” the contents into the opening either above the lifter shown or via the opening on the offside of the truck, which was shut via a sliding door. The jumping up method of emptying tubs was a backbreaker, otherwise the heavier tubs full of glass would be emptied into a 240L at ground level. No compactor in these bodies too! When the truck was mostly empty, common practice was to fly back in reverse and slam the brakes to launch the load towards the rear, otherwise as the truck filled you had to raise the body as if tipping off. I was told one day the boys did the quick reverse method and the tailgate unlatched itself, spilling the load all over the street.
Overall, the subject matter of this shot isn't all that exciting. I've been working on a technique for the last few days and this one was mostly a technical exercise. Check this one out in Large Size for the whole effect. What you are looking at is about 15 photos stitched together to form one photo that appears to have a very open aperture. I took the shots with the 85mm lens at f/1.4 and then stitched them together in photoshop. What it does is give it a very high resolution and the look of f/0.5 or something like that -- it almost has a tilt-shift quality to it. I've seen this technique referred to as the Brenizer Method or Bokehrama, but I'm not sure if that's the proper name or not (or if there really is a proper name). Overall, I liked the look, so I figured that I'd experiment with it. The original stitched image was something like 40 megapixels, so you're not really getting the full effect on flickr (I'm not sure where you could actually use all of those pixels -- maybe a billboard or something?).

I think the coolest part about a technique like this is that it is so "new". It has only been a couple of years now that computers and software were powerful enough to stitch photos like this. Accordingly, we're dealing with a technique that you probably won't find in books and one that hasn't been around for 50 to 100 years like a lot of photography techniques. Pretty cool.

This time, Jeff Morris and John Bahu joined me in the exhausting hike out to the bridge - a bit under four miles round trip.
The Pine Valley Creek Bridge, officially named the Nello Irwin Greer Memorial Bridge, is a reinforced concrete box girder bridge in San Diego County, California near the town of Pine Valley. The bridge was built in 1974 as part of the Interstate 8 (I-8) freeway system. At the time of its construction, it was the first bridge constructed in the United States using the segmental balanced cantilever method. The northern span is 1,691 ft (515.4 m) long while the southern span is 1,741 ft (530.7 m) long. The two spans rise 450 ft (137.2 m) above the valley floor, placing Pine Valley Creek Bridge among the highest bridges in the United States.
Originally known unofficially as the Pine Valley Creek Bridge, a California State Senate concurrent resolution (SCR-33) officially named the bridge in honor of the project engineer, Nello Irwin Greer, responsible for designing the section of I-8 known as the "Pine Valley Project".
In the original design, the freeway's routing followed the old U.S. Route 80 (US 80) path through the center of the town of Pine Valley. This would have destroyed much of the town and many of the native pines found there. Greer's design re-routed the freeway to the south, bypassing and preserving the quaint beauty of this eastern San Diego County mountain community. This new design also saved 2 miles (3.2 km) of freeway construction, saving millions of dollars in costs. However this re-routing of the freeway mandated the crossing of the Pine Valley Creek Canyon. The bridge that now bears Greer's name was the design answer to that engineering hurdle.
The Dainty Green Tree Frog is commonly found in vegetation emerging from the water in streams and swamps, often in temporary water. It is found in a range of habitats including rainforest, woodland and forest. It is commonly found near human developments, in gardens or farms.

During the 19th century villages such as Youlgrave instigated methods of providing drinkable water for domestic use to points where it could be distributed. These schemes over the years, in most cases, were superseded by larger water companies and then by national bodies formed after the Second World War. Youlgrave, unlike many small villages, has retained its own waterworks.
Prior to the founding of the waterworks, water was drawn from the River Bradford and a number of wells, which were situated on the village (north) side of the river. Much of the sickness and many of the deaths occurring amongst children during the fever months of July and August were thought to have been the result of contamination when river levels were low.
The initiative for forming the waterworks came mainly from the Friendly Society of Women founded in 1827. A fund was set up by the society to meet the cost. Benjamin Staley, a local man, was employed as surveyor. He produced a scheme to bring water from a spring at Mawstone on the hillside south of the village and the Bradford Dale.
The water was piped from the spring to a cistern with a capacity of 1,500 gallons situated in the centre of the village via a two-inch diameter cast-iron pipe; this was a distance of about 1100 yards from the spring, at a cost of £252.13 shillings and 10 pence halfpenny.
The cistern, known locally as the fountain, filled up overnight. A waterkeeper paid by the committee unlocked the tap at six o’clock each morning.
By 1869 corrosion and furring up of the two-inch pipe to the cistern seriously restricted the water supply. The committee raised subscriptions to finance the connection of an additional spring from Bleakley, renew pipe work to the cistern and provide mains in the village to supply ten taps, known locally as tap spots. Each able bodied man was requested to pay for three days’ labour or work for three days on the project. The scheme was finished in November 1869 at a cost of £381. A day of celebration was held in the village and the ancient custom of well dressing was revived and continues to this day.
By 1926 heavier demand and lack of pressure to the higher levels of the village compelled the Waterworks Committee to consider upgrading the system once again.
The present day Waterworks is managed by a Board of 12 Directors who are dedicated to preserve the village supply. Much of the old infrastructure has been replaced and brought up to modern day standards whilst improvements remain ongoing. The Board has completed the replacement of the water treatment plant and 150 years after the second undertaking: the link at Mawstone Lane to create of a ring main to improve flow around the village was completed in November 2019. An overnight header tank system to assist with peak consumption times is planned for 2024 if our lottery bid is successful.
Youlgrave Water currently extracts 22 million gallons annually from Bleakley Spring and serves 500 households and businesses in the village. This level was set 35 years ago.
Youlgrave Water is a non-profit making company Limited by Guarantee -Registered No. 3156766. Directors do not receive fees or salaries and it is run solely for the benefit of its members – each property supplied in the village.
