Metadata is everywhere. To introduce people to the concept I often use the iTunes interface to explain how each item is a piece of metadata. In this case the information about the file is contained in ID3 tags embedded in an MP3 file.

 

How about meta-metadata? The description you are reading about this image (of a screenshot of the iTunes interface showing ID3 tags in an MP3 file) was contained in an EXIF field, which was embedded in this jpeg image file, extracted by flickr.com, and retrieved from flickr.com's servers by your web browser.
