The Virgin and Child with Two Angels is a fairly typical example of fifteenth-century panel painting. The wall on which Mary is sitting refers to the hortus closus, or private garden, a symbol of Mary's Immaculate Conception. The fruit an angel is offering to Jesus points to his role as the new Adam and Messiah. The panel is ascribed to the Master of Frankfurt. This anonymous master worked in Antwerp between 1490 and 1515. His name is taken from two altarpieces found in Frankfurt.

Luke 12:35-37 "Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, Like men waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. I tell you the truth, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them. "
