I FINALLY deboxed him. This one came in a badly damaged box so it was the perfect excuse to free him from his cardboard cage. I still have another one that I'm keeping NIB for my in-box collection.
I'm not sure whether I've mentioned this here before, but this merman was the main reason I joined the barbie signature membership on the Mattel Creations' site few years back.
I know his design is relatively simple considering his $100USD price point, but I still really adore him - I love how masculine his sculpt is, and he literally shines like golden treasure out of box. I'm in love for sure <3

A merman bartender Christmas ornament that I got in Montreal while visiting at Christmas with my friends Will and Mary.
The west face of the choir screen has upper & lower carved panels; the upper panels depict the 4 evangelists & Moses & God in shell-like semicircles. The carving is unexcelled & extremely well preserved. Here St. Luke with his ox & his book. He's doing the splits.

Who was this gurgling Merman???
One of the first printed records about this gate stated in 1859 "Of all old monuments in the Rhine valley, none as mysterious as the portal (...) near the church in Remagen".
The Pfarrhoftor (= Gateway to the parish close) still is enigmatic. It may have been erected for a nearby monastery, that centered around an St. Apollinaris shrine, it may have been in deed a gate to a parish close. Actually it known since the 17th century, when parts of it were found, walled in between the rectory and the encircling wall. The parts were recovered and like pieces of a puzzle joined together.
Though the cope stone was lost, the large arch was easy to reconstruct. Wether the smaller side portal originally was left or right is unclear.
The 22 carved reliefs here have triggered more than a dozend different theories. I will quote some. The carving style was not appreciated by the art-historians. Already Wilhelm Bode ("Geschichte der Deutschen Plastik") wrote in 1887 that the carver was "without any artistic ambition".
For me this portal has parallels in Linden and Goegging. All three portals are roughly carved - and enigmatic, blending christian, pagan and ancient icons. The only point, that is undisputed is, that the portal was erected in the second half of the 12th century.
It may be, that the reliefs, seen here, are just single icons, that are not interconnected to a certain "iconographic program". This is claimed by Paul Clement (1938), Georg Dehio (1933) and Josef Minn (1942). In 1947 Albert M. Koeniger published the results of his research, interpreting the reliefs as icons of eight (!) deadly sins as described by Bishop Burchard of Worms (965-1025), author of a canon law collection (aka "Decretum Burchardi").
The semicircle starts with a paddling mermaid and ends on the right with a merman, presenting, what he has caught. The merman has eight fish. Following Koeninger, these fish stand for eight souls/ the eight deadly sins. He has three fish in the basket, four under his left arm and one in his right hand. In most other carvings, I have seen sofar elsewhere, the fish-icon is connected to "ichthys". Other than his "spouse" on the left, this merman has no legs.
The house called Brusttuch {pocket kerchief} was built in 1521-9 for Johannes Thiling. Many of the larger sections involve a tussle of some kind. The panels above the painted triangles depict greatly distorted mermaids & -men & fantastic fish and birds.

White for the witching hours is strongly advocated by Ethel Merman, who wears this Royer-designed formal ensemble in 20th Century-Fox' "Happy Ending," in which she is featured with Sonja Henie, Don Ameche and Cesar Romero. Softly clinging white silk jersey fashions the shirred and fringed dress, whose halter top drapes around the shoulders, drops from a bolero effect in front to a daring open back. Circular swirls of fluffy white fox form the complementary and graceful fur cape.

The church guide states that "at least three" Green Men are represented on the bench ends. The equivocation is puzzling. The four presented below seem clear enough to me. Here, I'd like to think I have found a fifth. It is unconventional, but so are the two that combine the Green Man with the Merman. Here we have yet another Merman, but this one seems to combine the two symbols. He holds his tail(s) in a basket-like configuration that may represent a vessel for the earth's bounty, but, remarkably, the ends of his tail erupt into what are clearly foliations, and from their centers are emerging what appear to be shafts of grain (wheat? corn?). On the lower part of the same bench end, separate but given almost equal space, is a branch with leaves and fruit (berries?). The Merman rests comfortably on this base, and I doubt the overall composition is accidental.

- V polovině sezóny se mi poškodila ploutev v zeleném kostýmu. Musel jsem se poohlédnout po nové monoploutvi, abych si i nadále užíval tento nádherný způsob plavání. Hledal jsem v českých vodách a našel tuto od Happytails. Ploutev v barvách ryb rodu Klaunů.
- In the middle of the season, my fin in a green costume was damaged. I had to look for a new monofin to continue to enjoy this wonderful way of swimming. I searched in Czech waters and found this one from Happytails. Fin in the colors of the genus Clownfish.
