A trip to Hells Gate Lighthouse situated at the dangerous narrow and shallow entrance to Macquarie Harbour, Tasmania. 'Hells Gate', however, was so-called by the convicts shipped there after British colonisation where some places in Australia were used as harsh penal colonies.
The one here was Sarah island, the notorious Macquarie Harbour Penal Station (1822-1833), housing the so-called 'worst' convicts, those who had reoffended or who had escaped from other settlements. It was separated from the mainland by the wide expanse of river, surrounded by a mountainous wilderness and was hundreds of miles away from the colony's other settled areas. Impossible to escape in any durable way.
Indeed, the only mob of convicts, who actually escaped the penal settlement, when in the dense forest (or bush) ran out of food, and ended up eating each other in desperation of being unable to get very far and in not wanting to return to the jail to get mercilessly flogged. One fine day i had a snap session with him. I make brutal art that day - to be honest, of course i didnĀ“t. As always, I took one trillion snaps and then deleted almost all of them. He really has been so humble and kind, he was very patient with me. He always behaved like a gentelman.
Another time we had a conversation where he talked about not being perfect and facing life as best he can. That impressed me very much, because people in our "perfect world" are afraid of showing weakness and rarely talk about having flaws. I think that says everything about him as the human being.
Without art I would never have met him, so I'm thankful for this moments. His attitude towards life and his way of treating people well shows the truth in his heart. Always reach for the stars, my friend Arnno.
