Romagnano al Monte is a ghost town with a bleak melancholy. Time remained crystallized on November 23, 1980, the date of the devastating earthquake that struck like a merciless ax on Southern Italy. At the entrance of the town there are buildings with modern architecture, built in the seventies, which clash with the ancient houses of the village. This helps to accentuate the estrangement effect, amplifying the echo of uneasiness. Several buildings have collapsed or crumbling, but it is still possible to find faint traces of the life of the past: kitchens furnished with chairs and tables, old newspaper clippings, rusty cans. The visit to the Church of the Madonna del Rosario, dating back to the 17th century, is impressive and moving to say the least. The building is striking for its magnetic beauty that contrasts with the surrounding desolation, made of rubble and collapsed beams.

Out on a windy but wonderfully sunny Saturday morning, and I don't think the wind has dropped its power since the day I took this photo two weeks ago. We seem to be in its path wherever we are, it's merciless ! Looks set to be the same for a few days yet but without any sun. Come on Spring !!!
'Who has seen the wind?
Neither I nor you:
But when the leaves hang trembling,
The wind is passing through.
Who has seen the wind?
Neither you nor I:
But when the trees bow down their heads,
The wind is passing by.'
- Christina Rossetti
Thank you as always for your kind comments - or just for looking. Every view is appreciated, as I'm sure you know !

I consider nature to be generous to us, but we are paying too much and the consequences are merciless.
In the middle of winter in Brazil we have temperatures that reach 32º 34º Celsius.
* I'm grateful for visit, faves and comments of my photo.
Asian rhinos, in contrast to their African counterparts, possess a distinctive and heavily armored appearance, owing to the numerous folds in their skin. These magnificent creatures are herbivores, primarily feeding on a diet consisting of tall grasses, shrubs, leaves, and fruits. As they graze, they play a significant role in shaping and restructuring the landscapes they inhabit. However, the unfortunate truth is that some Asian rhinoceros species are on the brink of extinction.
Vietnam's last Javan rhinos, a critically endangered subspecies, tragically became extinct in 2010. One of the most pressing threats to these remarkable animals is poaching. Rhinoceroses are mercilessly hunted by poachers for their horns, which fetch exorbitant prices on the black market. East Asia, particularly Vietnam, stands out as the largest market for rhino horns.
Rhino horns, despite being composed of keratin, the same protein found in hair and fingernails, are coveted for their supposed therapeutic properties. Some cultures grind these horns into dust and consume it as traditional medicine or use it for ornamental purposes. Astonishingly, the price of rhino horns, when measured by weight, can rival that of gold on the black market.
Among Asian rhino species, both African species and the Sumatran rhinoceros possess two horns, while the Indian and Javan rhinoceros have a single horn. Regrettably, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List categorizes the black rhinoceros, Javan rhinoceros, and Sumatran rhinoceros as critically endangered, highlighting the urgent need for conservation efforts to protect these magnificent creatures from extinction.
Meanwhile, it has started to drizzle and the desolation and gloom of the western coast of the island are emphasized by this.
The devastation of the sea since the island was returned to nature becomes clear here.
The sea has mercilessly struck back here and recaptured what humanity has taken from it.
The large chunk in the foreground is not a piece of rock, but a large piece of the bottom of the salt marsh that has been torn off the sand by the fiercing waves.
Along the line of the surf during high tide there are also pieces of the former salt marsh, but these are further crunched at high tide and stronger wind. On the side of the piece in the foreground you can clearly see the remnants of the root systems of the former vegetation....
All-black songbird with decurved bill and long, cleft tail that curves up at the end. Adult has bright red eye, young birds dark-eyed. Plumage shows metallic iridescence in optimal light. Metallic Starling has finer bill, tapered tail. Inhabits great variety of habitats, where it chases insects mercilessly. Perches prominently, delivering harsh, squawking calls, often mimicking other species such as butcherbirds and kingfishers. (eBird)

We saw a variety of drongos in India, so were pleased to find another species in Australia. They are quite common, usually found by call. A quick survey of the nearby bushes will usually reveal a dark shadow in the tree.

I tried to grow Shasta daisies for years with no luck, but this little weed just popped up one day this spring and would like to take over. I read that I have to mercilessly pull it out or it will take over the whole yard. And I believe it!

a lot of people make fun of it, it's okay. Flo and Goodes never did that, they encouraged me to do what I love - thank you both

As I settled into my one man hide in the afternoon waiting for the bears to wake up and get active, there was always some entertainment to keep you occupied. One evening a pair of Sparrowhawkes were chasing the Jays mercilessly, I never saw a Jay get caught, but the Sparrowhawks never stopped trying !!

We saw this bird on our first day in Darwin as we walked around the park opposite our hotel. We'd seen drongoes in India, so this was a reasonably easy id.

She sits him down in a stiff chair
Rubs his back and strokes his hair
Telling him it's okay to cry
But he just sits and stare
The merciless moon outside
Has nothing now he's come to realize
Only the desolation he feels
The cold distance inside
But you and I now
We can be alright
Just hold on to what we know is true
You and I now
Though it's cold inside
Feel the tide turning
While the priest just sits and weeps
Lamenting the fact that he can see
Starving himself of goodness
He doesn't think he can heal
Refusing what he knows to be real
He's turns away from every meal
Starving himself of goodness
He doesn't think he can heal
But you and I now
We can be alright
Just hold on to what we know is true
You and I now
Though it's cold inside
Feel the tide turning

Do it your way, love is never wasted - whenever people reject you, they always learn how pathetic it is to be completely alone and pretend it feels great - the truth is, no beating heart ever wants to be alone
Repeated so many times, always wrong - it's not about loving yourself. You breathe day after day and take it for granted. Ain't! Have humility, learn to love other people and then take a look in the mirror
Aloha to my friend Alby! You always have warm words for those around you. I like your calm manner very much. You never get my words wrong. Your love for poetry and your honest way of sharing your feelings brought us both together. Keep your openness to other people in your heart, even if they hurt you sometimes. Life shines so brightly in you ❤
