In Yosemite National Park gorgeous views await around every curve. Here, as we look across the Merced River and the meadow, we see El Capitan and some of the other rock walls of Yosemite Valley. The log in the river was a fortunate happenstance.
Just got back with Vibro1 and Psa148 from a quick jaunt to Yosemite, to try to catch the aftereffects of the latest big snowfall. Even though we didn't get dramatic skies this time, there was plenty of beauty to see and shoot. This is a 4-shot HDR along the Merced River of the Cathedral Spires.
Beginning in the high country of Yosemite National Park, the Merced River makes a headlong rush through glacially-carved canyons, rugged mountains and foothills to the San Joaquin Valley. Multiple access points allow skilled whitewater enthusiasts to challenge the rapids at your own pace. Enjoy a day of fishing before gathering around the campfire to cook up the day's catch at McCabe Flat, Willow Placer or Railroad Flat campgrounds.

Near midday after an overnight snowfall, April 1, 2014.
The "Swinging Bridge" (which doesn't) over the Merced River is a very popular place under ordinary conditions. On this day, however, the park was sparsely populated, probably because road conditions on two of the three access routes to the Valley were not very good, limiting day-only visitors.
Upper Yosemite Fall has a vertical drop of more than 1,400 feet. Usually at this time of year its volume would be more robust, but this has been a winter of severe drought.
Yosemite Valley after a cold night , the valley thawed and mist rose from every surface creating a very moody Yosemite.
Early morning light with great reflections of the Merced River as it meanders through Yosemite Valley.
Switching gears to brush and knife here :-).
Wanted to share one of my latest Yosemite painting based on a reference from my recent trip. El portal and Incline road are one of our favorite spots to stop during spring. Done on a 11X14 canvas with water soluble oil. Background sky & hills done with brush and the foreground foliage done with a brush & knife combo. Hope you like it :-).
I do have a more complete portfolio of my paintings and photos on my facebook artist page if you are interested, Hemas Canvas and Clicks
The Merced River flows past the world's largest single exposed piece of granite.
Yes, those green fuzzy things on top are full sized trees!
Winter time, but feels almost like summer. I took this shot wearing a t-shirt and jeans. Need to come back during winter after a fresh snow and when the water is a bit more still.
Macro shot of frosty leaves found on the bank of the Merced River in Yosemtie National Park. Teddy, Anita, Pat and I took a 2-day workshop with Michael Frye. No snow, but what a wonderful experience!
THE signature view of Yosemite National Park, Half Dome Mountain is probably photographed from this exact spot hundreds if not thousands of time every day on average -- so in a year, people probably record this view tens or hundreds of thousands of time each year.
I wish I had the time to take a few hundred myself on this day, though, and string them together into a time-lapse video, so active were the atmospherics. Like everything else in the Valley, we had never seen it quite like this.
(By the way, when viewed from a higher elevation, at Glacier or Washburn Points, for example, it becomes clear that "Half Dome" is a misnomer. The shape of this remarkable monolith is actually more like that of a gigantic tenon.)
Highway 140 to Yosemite meets the Merced River at this point, but continues toward Yosemite on the other side of the river and doesn't cross this bridge.
the Half Dome under a beautiful blanket of snow
Heavy rain brought winter weather to Yosemite National Park, with snow-covered trees in the valley below Half Dome.
