Dernière éruption du Merbabu (1797) alors que son voisin le Merapi est en activité (dernière éruption 2010).
The place that I took this picture is commonly known as Punthuk Setumbu. From here the magnificent Borobudur looks so small between the hedge trees in the background Merbabu mountain.

Approximately 40 kilometres northwest of Yogyakarta and 86 kilometres west of Surakarta, Borobudur is located in an elevated area between two twin volcanoes, Sundoro-Sumbing and Merbabu-Merapi, and two rivers, the Progo and the Elo. According to local myth, the area known as Kedu Plain is a Javanese 'sacred' place and has been dubbed 'the garden of Java' due to its high agricultural fertility. During the restoration in the early 20th century, it was discovered that three Buddhist temples in the region, Borobudur, Pawon and Mendut, are positioned along a straight line. A ritual relationship between the three temples must have existed, although the exact ritual process is unknown. Borobudur was built on a bedrock hill, 265 m above sea level and 15 m above the floor of a dried-out paleolake. The lake's existence was the subject of intense discussion among archaeologists in the 20th century. In 1931, a Dutch artist and scholar of Hindu and Buddhist architecture, W.O.J. Nieuwenkamp, developed a theory that the Kedu Plain was once a lake and Borobudur initially represented a lotus flower floating on the lake.
Clouds are flying over Borobudur temple in such a dramatic way that it seems like they are giving guard of honor to temple.

The most appropriate time to enjoy the Borobudur from Setumbu is at dawn. Enjoying the sunrise behind Mount Merbabu and silhouetted Borobudur among the hedge trees, banded morning dew and golden yellow light. Sometime if we get lucky, ROL (Ray of Light) appears which pierce through the clouds.

This time I managed to captured sunset light in this place. Rawa Pening is a lake in Ambarawa, not far from Semarang - Capital of Central Java. What I love about this place is the mountains there in the background, really nice combination with the lake.

Mount Merapi, Gunung Merapi (literally Fire Mountain in Indonesian/Javanese), is an active stratovolcano located on the border between Central Java and Yogyakarta, Indonesia. It is the most active volcano in Indonesia and has erupted regularly since 1548. It is located approximately 28 kilometres (17 mi) north of Yogyakarta city, and thousands of people live on the flanks of the volcano, with villages as high as 1,700 metres (5,600 ft) above sea level.

Borobudur, a Buddhist temple and one of Indonesia's most popular tourist attraction. Constructed in 9th century, it was then abandoned and spent most of its time under the volcanic ash until it was found again by Sir Raffles of the British. It then had undergone many restoration process and now its a Unesco Heritage Site.
I had the opportunity to photograph this amazing location with Elia Locardi. On the last day of our stay, the sunset did not disappoint us.
This shot is actually facing east towards the two volcanos, Mt Merapi and Mt Merbabu with the warm glow of setting sun bathing the temple itself. The afternoon was so clear that we can see the two mountains clearly in the distance.
