Taman Nasional Gunung Merapi - in 2004 an area of 6,410 hectares around Mount Merapi was established as a national park. The decision of the Ministry of Forestry to declare the park has been subsequently challenged in court by The Indonesian Forum for Environment, on grounds of lack of consultation with local residents. Following the 2010 eruption, three Indonesian government departments declared a prohibited zone which nobody can permanently stay and no infrastructure is allowed in several villages.

Mount Merapi is an active volcano near the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta. This photo was taken from the balcony of a hotel downtown. In 2006 I arranged for the Australian Computer Society to fund the deployment of a web based open source disaster management system as an eruption was conidered imminent. Fortunatly this did not happen.
