This view is with the volcano behind the camera. A pyroclastic flow about 1000 years ago is said to have made it up the hill in the background.
Thousands of people are still arriving at Yogyakarta's Maguwoharjo stadium.
The President of Indonesia Susilo has now declared the volcanic eruptions a "national disaster".

Merapi Lava Tour. Sand mining seems to be the principal activity around the Sabo dams where the cold lava flow carrying sand, boulders and debris are contained by the barriers during heavy torrential rain.
So quiet a few month ago, today november 2010, the Merapi volcano entered into eruption, it's been a few weeks now. I heard some new from a friend of mine, back in Indonesia.
The whole city of Jogjakarta is in alert now, people are evacuating to some remote places (the safety perimeter as been enlarged from 15 to 25km around the volcano). An old Javanese man used to be the keeper of the Merapi, he died a few weeks ago due to the hot cloud of the Merapi. There is no one to keep Jogja from the Merapi now Javanese people believe the volcano will totally destroy the city...
This was about one month before Mt Merapi decided to have an explosion, killing 353 people and forcing the evacuation of 350,000 (presumeably including from this location). This image was taken at dusk and with a thunderstorm approaching.
The Maguwoharjo stadium is now being used a shelter for thousands of displaced. Some 4 - 5,000 have already arrived. Aid agencies expect up to 10,000 to be sheltered here.

MAGELANG 22/1 - LAHAR DINGIN MERAPI. Sejumlah warga menyaksikan detik-detik terjadinya banjir lahar dingin di aliran Kali Putih di tengah jalan raya Magelang-Yogyakrta Dusun Gempol, Jumoyo, Magelang, Jateng, Sabtu (22/1). Banjir lahar dingin kali ini menggerus badan jalan Magelang-Yogyakarta km 23 dengan lebar hingga lebih dari tujuh meter dan panjang 30 meter, sehingga untuk sementara jalan raya Magelang Yogyakarta kembali ditutup total karena banyaknya timbunan material vulkanik Gunung Merapi.
