Started the walk to the summit of one of Indonesia's most active volcanos at 1am to be at the peak by sunrise. Merapi looms over the city of Yogyakarta and often spews smoke and sends out occasional tremors.

Domestic belongings destroyed in the last eruption on November 30, 2010 on display to visitors.
Taman Nasional Gunung Merapi - in 2004 an area of 6,410 hectares around Mount Merapi was established as a national park. The decision of the Ministry of Forestry to declare the park has been subsequently challenged in court by The Indonesian Forum for Environment, on grounds of lack of consultation with local residents. Following the 2010 eruption, three Indonesian government departments declared a prohibited zone which nobody can permanently stay and no infrastructure is allowed in several villages.
