Sand mining seems to be the principal activity around the Sabo dams where the cold lava flow carrying sand, boulders and debris are contained by the barriers during heavy torrential rain. The so-called Merapi Lava Tour by the operators of the jeep tour community turned out simply a 4WD adventure.
Taman Nasional Gunung Merapi - in 2004 an area of 6,410 hectares around Mount Merapi was established as a national park. The decision of the Ministry of Forestry to declare the park has been subsequently challenged in court by The Indonesian Forum for Environment, on grounds of lack of consultation with local residents. Following the 2010 eruption, three Indonesian government departments declared a prohibited zone which nobody can permanently stay and no infrastructure is allowed in several villages.

Prambanan, Central Java, Indonesia
The bas-reliefs along the balustrades on the gallery around the Shiva and Brahma temples depict scenes from the Ramayana. On the balsutrades in Vishnu temple are a series of bas-reliefs depicting Krishnayana, the story of Krishna.
Prambanan is the 9th century Hindu temple compound in Central Java, Indonesia, near Jogja (Yogyakarta city), dedicated to Trimurti—the Creator (Brahma), the Sustainer (Vishnu) and the Destroyer (Shiva). This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the largest Hindu temple in Indonesia & one of the largest south-east Asia. It is characterised by its tall and pointed architecture, and by the towering 47m high central Shiva temple inside a large complex of individual temples. These temples stand despite having seen abandonment and deterioration due to power struggles and decline in the ruling empire as well as major earthquakes and volcanic eruptions of Merapi, located north of Prambanan, in the 10th, 16th, and 21st centuries.
The Prambanan compound has 200+ temples in this Shivaite temple complex. There are three main zones. First the outer zone marked by a rectangular wall that has been destroyed and next the middle zone containing in four concentric rows 224 individual small shrines ("Candi Perwara" guardian or complementary temples) whose foundations stand but the remainder of the temples are scattered stones. The final zone is the holiest inner zone that comprises of eight main temples and eight small shrines on a square elevated platform surrounded by square stone walls with stone gates on each of the four cardinal points. The three main temples are dedicated to Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu. The three shrines in front of the three main temples are dedicated to the vehicles or vahanas of Brahma (the swan Angsa), Shiva (the bull Nandi), and Vishnu (the eagle Garuda).
We got to the Merapi danger zone at about 6.30AM. We could not go via one of the official waypoints so we had to take sideways and dissemble some barricades. We had a local guide and (presumably) bribed army security officer. Being there so soon was crucial since in rainy season, clouds can gather quickly covering the volcano making it impossible to see where the hot and toxic ash is being taken by the wind. At one moment, we had to get out of the bikes and continue walking
Mount Merapi is one of the world's most dangerous and active volcanoes. Its still spewing out smoke and when the weather clears up we can see it from our hotel rooms very clearly.
makes me feel very insignificant.
