Er ligt een reusachtig varken op een mooi gedekte tafel. 240 kilo, schoon aan de haak en rijp voor de slacht. Een smakelijk stukje vlees, of…? Hoe vaak zien we de dieren die we eten van zo dichtbij? Zelden toch? En dat geldt zeker voor dode dieren. Kadavers vinden we vies, beangstigend of zielig en toch kiezen de meeste mensen voor een stukje vlees bij het avondeten. De Hasseltse kunstenaar Dirk Claesen besloot een hyperrealistische reproductie van een dood varken te maken om erachter te komen wat’zo’n beeld met mensen doet. Het prachtige beest is al ontdaan van de ingewanden, die liggen naast de tafel op de grond. Angstaanjagend of puur natuur?

Beeldhouwer Dirk Claesen heeft in vijftien jaar tijd een omvangrijk oeuvre van hyperrealistische afgietsels van dieren en mensen opgebouwd. Hoewel hij naar eigen zeggen geen ‘kunst’ maakt, bereikt hij met zijn beelden een groots effect. Daarom roept ‘Varken’ niet alleen vragen op over hoe wij als consument omgaan met het slachten van varkens voor voedsel, maar ook over de grenzen van kunst. Claesen exposeerde in diverse musea, waaronder Odapark Venray en werkt regelmatig in opdracht van natuurhistorische musea in binnen- en buitenland.
