The mountain streams fill the lake in little falls...the sound of the song birds and the falls glistening in the sun is such a pleasure-it was hard to leave
This melodic warbler is widely distributed across Britain & Ireland through the breeding season, and increasingly in winter too.
Blackcap breeding numbers have steadily increased in the UK since the late-1970s, and have also expanded their breeding range throughout northern Scotland and the island of Ireland during this time. They are now absent only on the highest Scottish peaks and farthest flung islands. In autumn, these breeding birds depart for southern Europe and are replaced by Blackcaps from central Europe. BTO research has helped show how garden bird feeding led to the evolution of this new migratory route and wintering strategy. Although widespread in winter, Blackcaps tend to be absent from the uplands at this time of year.
Blackcaps have a greyish overall appearance. The eponymous black cap is only found in the males; females and juveniles have a brown cap instead. The song is very similar to that of the Garden Warbler, but can be distinguished with practice. Blackcaps are found in parks, deciduous woodland and scrub, as well as at garden feeding stations.

The Winter Wren is one of my favorite winter resident birds here in the Pineywoods. They breed in the northern U.S. and in scattered populations in the Appalachians. On their summer territories they belt out an incredibly complicated, melodic song. Sadly we don't get to hear it here on their wintering grounds. I photographed this bird on a bitterly cold, gray winter day befitting of it's namesake.

Winter woodlands can be a magical place. The low winter sun casts long shadows and the golden light is cut by stark bare trees. However the woods are far from silent and signs of the season to come can be found if you look closely.Winter singing is unusual in British birds, but the Robin’s melancholic song is heard throughout the country as the temperatures drop. With other birds quiet, it is a great time to really get to know the song of this common bird. It is a melodic, fluty song, beautiful and sad at the same time. With everything else quiet, the beauty of the song seems extra special

The Dunnock, along with Robin this wee birdie is a true melodic bird. Its song is a delight to hear.
This stunning Woodlark (Lullula arborea) was photographed whilst perched gracefully on a weathered log. The bird's streaked brown plumage blends seamlessly with its natural surroundings, showcasing its excellent camouflage. The soft, blurred background enhances the focus on the Woodlark, highlighting its delicate features and upright posture. Known for their melodic songs, Woodlarks are often found in open woodlands and heathlands, creating a serene and calming ambiance wherever they go.
Taken early morning with the lake in the background, this tiny bird made a very loud sound for it's size, very melodic and very pretty.
The building here is a small part of what was once a magnificent old hall that once stood at Trentham Gardens. It's 180 years old and Grade II listed but unused and rather dilapidated. About 15 years ago I played in an acoustic guitar and vocal duo called Arcana Blue and we used to rehearse in one of the upper rooms of this fine old building - it was a converted recording studio - various of the rooms were in use at that time and it was really special to have access to the wonderful gardens after hours and have those fabulous views as we made sweet music.
Another nostalgic musical connection is to the magnificent old ballroom that stood just a few years to the right of what you see in this image. That was knocked down about 20 years ago and a big garden centre built on the site but back in the 1960s and 70s it was a local concert venue (besides it's use a s a dance hall) - I saw some great bands there in the 70s when I was a teenager - Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Status Quo, Lynyrd Skynyrd, etc.

My goal on this trip was to capture this arch in a compelling way. I spent a lot of time here hiking around, above and inside the Alcove looking for perspectives. This shot required a multi-row vertical stitch at 15mm.

It's as if they can read the calendar. Every year, on the first of May, I can usually find one of these beautiful orange birds around our yard.
As soon as the pear and apple tree blossom, they descend on them. I always hear them before I see them, with their distinctive shrill and melodic call.

For the first time ever this summer I managed to make some images of Song Thrushes. All of them were birds on grass collecting earthworms for their young. As soon as they flew up into trees, they were lost from view behind dense foliage.
This latest image is another achievement, showing a perched bird in a Rowan. The bird suddenly flew in and landed, no doubt attracted by the comings and goings of eight Blackbirds and up to three Mistle Thrushes. Unlike them though, it sat motionless and didn’t feed. It’s a pity that it chose an overcast morning to make it’s debut, though I’m not complaining. A start has been made and there’s always another day, preferably sunnier, (as long as the berries last)!

Carload Express SD60M 6006 pops out of the CSX Schenley Tunnel in Pittsburgh's Oakland neighborhood.
Running on CSX's P&W Subdivision, the pair of former Conrail motors had the local transfer well in hand as 6006's melodic Leslie RS3L horn was echoing all around the neighborhood.
In melodic song, sometimes mimicking other species, a white-rumped shama (Copsychus malabaricus) makes its presence known deep in a Koolau valley.

That picture has been taken in Rauðfeldsgjá, Iceland. So now you know why I don't remember many names from the places I visited back in spring despite the islandic language sounding quite melodic. But it's fine, at least Rauðfeldsgjá was memorable enough so I don't have to remember its name to remember it altogether.
It is a huge, deep breach inside the mighty face of a cliff, creating a narrow canyon and that exclusive view that looks like a key hole, which is quite fortunate since I'm still starting to introduce you to Iceland.
