The white plastic bag is insufflated by the subject . The capsule is the measuring device that has to be mounted on the mouth piece of the bag after insufflation . When the bag is compressed , the air passes through the device . When alcohol is present , the crystals change from yellow to green . When this discoloration exceeds the thin line in the center , it implies that the amount of alcohol in the breath air exceeds the threshold of 0.25mg/liter air , equivalent to the presence of 0.5 g/liter blood .

When light passes through the rectangular window on the front of the camera (a Brownie Starmeter from the early 1960s) , the light meter reacts and moves the pointer to the proposed exposure value. The knurled ring around the lens is turned to set that value. It is a simplified system to catch the relationship between aperture and shutter speed , in order to get a correctly exposed picture .
