Kåkbrinken is the name of this small street in Stockholm Old Town (Gamla stan). The name is first attested in 1477. 'Brink' is not a word really used today, but mostly survives in names. It means a short slope. 'Kåk' is used today, it is slang for 'house' - and Kåken ('the kåk') actually means prison. But that was not what it meant back in the 15th century, then it meant pillory. This street was named after the pillory found on the square at one end of this street. But it is safe to say that most Swedes today would not know that is the case! (I myself, and I've studied history, found out when I read up on the name.)

Thraupis palmarum (Palm Tanager / Tángara palmera)
The Palm Tanager is one of the most widespread and familiar birds of the neotropics, from Nicaragua south to southern Brazil. They are common at forest borders, but also occur in the canopy of the interior of forest. As the name suggests, Palm Tanagers often are associated with palm trees, but by no means are they restricted to living in palms.

Colaptes rubiginosus
(Golden-olive woodpecker / Carpintero verdidorado)
The golden-olive woodpecker (Colaptes rubiginosus) is a resident breeding bird from Mexico south and east to Guyana, northwest Argentina, Trinidad and Tobago. It was formerly placed in the genus Piculus. The scientific name rubiginosus means "full of rust", describing the color of the bird's wings and back.
The habitat of this woodpecker is forests, more open woodland, and cultivation. It is most common in the mountains. Due to its habitat—mainly montane forest, separated by large rivers—it has evolved into about 20 subspecies. Andean birds show a pale eyering.
Golden-olive woodpeckers mainly eat insects, including ants and beetle larvae, with some fruit and berries.

Hello my amazing Flickr friends !
Today is a yellow day at Color my World Daily and this means we are in the middle of the week already !!! Isn’t that crazy ? The time flies so fast ! So here we are with another yellow picture. This one is all about watching what I eat. I need seriously to get back on track! And since we are Wednesday already that means that I have technically only one day left lol. We all know that starting a diet on Friday or during the weekend is virtually impossible for me… So you see, if i start something it has to be on Thursday … And since Thursday is a day off in Quebec this week, chances are that healthy eating will have to wait until next week or next year lol. Honestly my motivation is non existant right now. So that is why, we have Mr. Wooden Hand giving me a hand with my picture and showing a good exemple by holding a tiny apple (from a Lego set). This picture sums it all: I need a healthier diet and smaller portions ;-). And voilà !
But right now: another video meeting and coffee !! Mucho, mucho amor for you all !! Have a beautiful day my friends !! See you later!!
Thank you so much for all your lovely comments / favs/ general support / happy thoughts!! Stay safe and well!! And see you soon on Flickr !!

The name 'Generalife' means 'garden of the architect'. The Generalife is located on the hill Cerro del Sol, adjacent to the Alhambra. Originally it was most probably an architect's house that later passed to the Arab kings and was remodelled. The Generalife is composed of a series of large gardens, where every corner holds a novelty and a pleasant surprise for the eyes, with a minimum of obtrusive buildings.
The Patio is the true heart of the Generalife. Here, Arab sensuality becomes sparse yet spiritual.
The most beautiful and striking features in the Generalife gardens are the plants, the water with its continuous interplay with light, and its sounds.

The jabiru (Jabiru mycteria) is a large stork found in the Americas from Mexico to Argentina, except west of the Andes. It is most common in the Pantanal region of Brazil and the Eastern Chaco region of Paraguay. It is the only member of the genus Jabiru. The name comes from a Tupi–Guaraní language and means "swollen neck".
To live content with small means; to seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion, to be worthy, not respectable, and wealthy, not rich; to study hard, think quietly, talk gently, act frankly, to listen to stars and birds, to babes and sages, with open heart, to bear all cheerfully, to all bravely await occasions, hurry never. In a word, to let the spiritual unbidden and unconscious grow up through the common. This is to be my symphony. — William Henry Channing

Altes Rathaus means "Old City Hall".
The old city hall of Regensburg is a conglomerate of various styles, dating to different periods, with the oldest parts in GOthic style dating back to the 13th century. This is the eastern baroque extension, dating from 1660/1662.
The tower to the left is a reconstruction completed in 1363, after the original tower burned down in 1360.

This palace, which means ‘Stone House’, contains Khiva’s most sumptuous interior decoration, dense with blue ceramic tiles, carved wooden pillars and elaborate ghanch. Built by Allakuli Khan between 1832 and 1841 as a more splendid alternative to the Kuhna Ark, it’s said to have more than 150 rooms off nine courtyards, with high ceilings designed to catch the slightest desert breeze. Allakuli was a man in a hurry – the Tosh-Hovli’s first architect was executed for failing to complete the job in two years.

The new year means a new beginning, like this group of young beech trees in the middle of a spruce forest.
There was a time when my homeland was covered with huge old beech forests. Forests that had grown over thousands of years. Not only were they the defining habitat, also for my ancestors, they were also an important part of our culture. My ancestors, the Germanic tribes, lived in these forests. The Romans can sing a song about how well adapted we were to this habitat.
The massive trunks of trees were the pillars of our cathedrals and our high priests read the signs from small sticks of beech wood (the beech stick formed later the the german word for letter).
But then came the industrial revolution and with it the insatiable hunger for fuel and fast-growing building materials and with it the invention of the spruce monoculture.
The forest fires and the bark beetle have been showing us how successful this grandiose idea was for several years. Human history is full of such overwhelming ideas and as you can currently see we are not through with them yet.
I'm all the happier when I see something like this. Young beeches, which establish their own biotope in the middle of the spruces and are getting ready to restore the old stable condition of the forest.
Unfortunately, this process will take another two or three hundred years and it will be difficult for me to photograph the final end result.

Buren is a town and municipality in the Betuwe region of the Netherlands. The name originated from the word the Dutch word “buren”, which means neighbour.
The earliest known settlement of the region occurred as early as 772.The castle was built by the Lords of Buren and was first mentioned in 1298. The town was granted city rights in 1395 by Sir Alard IV of Buren which led to the construction of a defensive wall and a moat, significant portions of which still stand. In 1492, the region was promoted to a county but had limited economic influence due to its geographic isolation. By 1574, the previously Catholic parish church of Saint-Lambert became Calvinist Reformed Protestant.
The Castle eventually came into the possession of the House of Orange, the royal family of the Netherlands. The Dutch royal family has been known to use the name van Buren as an alias to give themselves some degree of anonymity. William III of England obtained the title Buren. The Dutch royal family, still use this as a title. The Castle was gradually demolished between 1804 and 1883. The eighth president of the United States, Martin Van Buren, traced his ancestry to inhabitants of the city, who had taken the surname Van Buren after relocating to the Dutch colony of New Netherland in what is now the state of New York.
The "Landesblick" (means "view of the countryside") is a higher situated vantage point in the volcanic Eifel. Down in the valley is the Meerfelder Maar (a volcanic lake) with the village Meerfeld.
On the left in the background you can see the "Mosenberg", a row crater, the only mountain crater lake north of the Alps.
In the distance, the view extends to the Hunsrück mountains.
All this a piece of home, where others go on holiday.

Montmartre, which means «mont des martyrs», owes his name to the martyrdom of Saint Dionysus, who was beheaded in this place around the year 250. Saint Dionysus was Bishop of Paris and is the patron saint of France.
It is believed that the religious symbolism of the hill is even older, and it has been suggested that it was a sacred place for druids due to its high location with respect to the rest of the area.
In the middle of the 19th century, many artists moved to live in Montmartre. At the end of the century, Montmartre became one of the main artistic centers of Paris.
Many thanks for the visits, faves and comments. Cheers
Buff-banded Rail
Scientific Name: Gallirallus philippensis
Description: The Buff-banded Rail is a medium-sized stout rail with short legs. It has a distinctive grey eyebrow and an orange-brown band on its streaked breast. The lores, cheek and hindneck are rich chestnut. The chin and throat are grey, the upperparts streaked brown and the underparts barred black and white. The eye is red. Young birds are much paler to white underneath, with indistinct bars and only a faint orange-brown tint on the breast. Downy chicks are fluffy black. This rail walks slowly, with tail raised and flicking constantly.
Similar species: The orange-brown breast band distinguishes the Buff-banded Rail from the similar but smaller Lewin's Rail,Dryolimnas pectoralis, which has a rich chestnut crown and nape and a proportionally longer pink bill.
Distribution: The Buff-banded Rail is widespread in mainland Australia, particularly along the eastern coast and islands, and on Norfolk and Lord Howe Islands. It is also found in south-east Asia, New Guinea and New Zealand.
Habitat: The Buff-banded Rail is seen singly or in pairs in dense reeds and vegetation bordering many types of wetlands or crops. It makes widespread use of artificial wetlands like sewage ponds and drainage channels.
Seasonal movements: The Buff-banded Rail is resident and possibly locally nomadic, though little is known of these movements.
Feeding: The Buff-banded Rail feeds on crustaceans, molluscs, insects, seeds, fruit, frogs, carrion and refuse. It mostly feeds early in the morning and the evening.
Breeding: Breeding is poorly known, but the Buff-breasted Rail nests in long grass, tussocks, rushes or crops. It makes an unlined cup-shaped nest of grasses or reeds. Both parents incubate and the young will leave the nest within 24 hours. Both parents remain with the young, which usually feed themselves, though the female may feed them as well. Two broods may be raised in some seasons.
Calls: Loud creaky squeak when breeding but usually silent.
Minimum Size: 28cm
Maximum Size: 33cm
Average size: 31cm
Average weight: 130g
Breeding season: September to February
Clutch Size: 5 to 8 eggs
Incubation: 19 days
Nestling Period: 1 days

The female House Sparrows in my garden seem to get on very well and as a rule do not often fight These two males seem to think it is their duty every time they see each other to have a very loud and public battle . Showing off in front of the girls I suspect !
House Sparrow are still a common bird in Uk in gardens parks and around farms . They feed on grain buds and scraps . They are listed as a red list species which means they at serious risk. In the last 15 years the House Sparrow population in London has dropped by almost 70% and they are now completely absent from many city centers

Taking photos of Cleo is beginning to get more difficult again. September arrived and she thought it was time to switch to hibernation mode although during the day it has still beeen summery warm. Hibernation mode means that she moves even less than usual and prefers to sleep in the darkest corners of the house. She hasn't moved into the basement yet but that is likely to happen in the near future. When I took this photo she was lying on her cushion in the living room and refused to move to a place with more light.
