Dark little historical tale. Way pre-#metoo

Yamato Totohi Momoso himemiko (倭迹迹日百襲媛命), the shaman aunt of Emperor Sujin, supposedly committed suicide after learning her husband was a trickster snake-god.

She became the wife of Oho-mono-nushi no Kami. This God, however, was never seen in the day-time, but at night. Yamato-toto-hi-momo-so-bime no Mikoto said to her husband: "As my Lord is never seen in the day-time, I am unable to view his august countenance distinctly; I beseech him therefore to delay a while, that in the morning I may look upon the majesty of his beauty." The Great God answered and said: "What thou sayest is clearly right. To-morrow morning I will enter thy toilet-case and stay there. I pray thee be not alarmed at my form." Yamato-toto-hi-momo-so-bime no Mikoto wondered secretly in her heart at this. Waiting until daybreak, she looked into her toilet-case. There was there a beautiful little snake, of the length and thickness of the cord of a garment. Thereupon she was frightened, and uttered an exclamation. The Great God was ashamed, and changing suddenly into human form, spake to his wife, and said: "Thou didst not contain thyself, but hast caused me shame; I will in my turn put thee to shame." So treading the Great Void, he ascended to Mount Mimoro. Hereupon Yamato-toto-hi-momo-so-bime no Mikoto looked up and had remorse. She flopped down on a seat and with a chopstick stabbed herself in the pudenda so that she died. She was buried at Oho-chi. Therefore the men of that time called her tomb the Hashi no haka [Chopstick Tomb]

The theme for this week is Bokeh. To get a good bokeh shot you really need a focal point in front of the light sources.... however unwilling. He's missing his fellow fashion victim this year.

Away from the finger pointing, blame and accusations. Let's face it, our way of life has caused this pandemic. And even if in sanctimonious righteousness we say we have followed the lock down rules, I suspect so many of us (and that includes me), perhaps unwittingly, have helped spread the virus, or at least have put others at risk on our behalf.

As someone who works in the transport industry I ask, who in lockdown decided to improve the garden, do some DIY, get some games to play with the kids, and buy items for their amusement and 'betterment' whilst stuck at home? All items that are not essential to life.

Who happily let delivery companies make hundreds of millions of extra deliveries that were not essential? Who happily let pickers, packers and drivers go to work and select, pack, handle and deliver whatever unessential item it was that would put a small smile on your face, whilst many sat at home (many on furlough pay, free to do as they wish at home), whilst the transport industry had to work full time, and put their families, and recipients and clients at increased risk of the virus?

There are few (including me) who can claim to not have contributed to the problem, perhaps only in a small way, but nonetheless guilty is guilty.

I'm not interested in the arguments, the accusations, the finger pointing in the media, often aimed at people who are doing their best to solve a problem that none of us has a solution to. Because by our own existence we are all part of the problem and until some people accept that, we are going nowhere.

I'm now going back in my hole.

And for May 14, the Mother's Day, of course <3

...Or, as Friend Aurelio says For Women today, everyday !

I was used to see my Amaryllis* plant blooming 2 symmetrical flowers, one opposite to the other. This time it blossomed three and the third and last (in the middle) just flowered this morning.

*Correct botanical name of these flowers above: Hippeastrum (genre Amaryllis).

Shot today in manual modality, in natural in-door noon light with my glorious Fujifilm XS-1 and its potent hyperzoom Fujinon lenses 624, an almost vintage camera exemplair bought last year pristine in box from the collection of a photographer. A great camera, a little complex as it's needed every time a manual set up and equalization of colours but apt to give true tones and such detailed textures in the things photographed that usually escape to the eye sight.

As I have been editing my image this morning, I've been listening to and viewing the live testimony of Christine Blasey Ford. It has been painful to watch her recall her experiences and I hope that her testimony will make a difference. Who are the people who would attack her and make death threats? There are many men in places of power and authority who have taken advantage of women and no one has ever dared stand up and speak out against them or if they have they are doubted or silenced. It is important to keep being brave and standing up and speaking out. Months ago I remember speaking to my cousins about the #metoo movement and none of them had ever had anything happen to them and were shocked about how many women were then coming out with their stories. It's funny how everyone's experiences are different but I was not surprised because I am no stranger to issues and know many others who also have painful pasts.

Be brave, speak the truth, the times seem to slowly be changing and maybe your voices will be heard.

Description in English and Dutch:

English

During the horrific reign of the sun king Louis XIV, several cruel atrocious wars took place. He waged so much war that the French were very poor at the end of his extremely violent reign of European terror. The transboundary predator thought that France and especially his Versailles were the center of the world. It was good for him that there was no metoo movement yet, because whether everything with his ladies was always voluntary, the worst stories were doing the rounds, but this aside. During the wild Dutch war the sworn party animal wanted to take the then fortified city of Maastricht personal in 1673. That was a very daring plan, but via the well-known Sint-Pietersberg, the city was quickly taken under the leadership of master tactician Sébastien Le Preste de Vauban. With the help of cannons, his unit shot parts of the fortress walls to shreds. Vauban used a zigzagging parallel tactic with trenches, which at the time was considered masterful. This siege of Maastricht was the reason for Baron van Dopff to build this impressive pentagonal fortress on the vulnerable spot on the Sint-Pietersberg around 1702. For decades this fort was the tough guardian angel of the city of Maastricht and later even of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. In 1717 it was visited by Peter the Great. The fortress is extra special, because it is connected underground with the impressive marl caves. A while ago I posted some pictures of these mysterious caves here.

Macro of the head of a Diadoumenos (plaster cast), shot outdoors, back-lit, wide open and processed in Fujifilm's raw converter and macOS High Sierra photo editor. Poem is by Schiller: "A vow of rapture was by Nature sworn - yes, even I was in Arcadia born".

So, as a 51 year old I thought I'd cut my running down from 4-5 times a week to twice a week and take up kickboxing in its place to keep my upper body strong. I purchased a freestanding man size punch bag on a stand and of course I had to have pink boxing gloves. I now spend 4 mornings a week kickboxing and I'm feeling fabulous after two weeks of this new sport. I do weights most days after my run but needed something different, I was born to run in the words of 'Springstein' but, I needed something tougher and more challenging especially with all the garden work I do.

Sadly I have had a few strange moments out running lately or walking Daisy. As a women this has made me feel uncomfortable and scared. I know I would be able to out run a bad person but probably not defend myself. I can now get stronger and learn a bit of self defence when I'm out running in lonely situations.

Funny old world sometimes.

Sadly Dog and Puppy theft is like a pandemic itself here in England, I only walk Daisy with another friend and her dogs or with my boys but, now I have two beauties to walk I need to know I can take care of them if I'm against a situation.

Here's to women's safety, staying strong and living a healthy life.

I Want Love

Elton John, Billy Joel

I want love, but it's impossible

A man like me, so irresponsible

A man like me is dead in places

Other men feel liberated

I can't love, shot full of holes

Don't feel nothing, I just feel cold

Don't feel nothing, just old scars

Toughening up around my heart

But I want love, just a different kind

I want love, won't break me down

Won't brick me up, won't fence me in

I want a love, that don't mean a thing

That's the love I want, I want love

I want love on my own terms

After everything I've ever learned

Me, I carry too much baggage

Oh man I've seen so much traffic

But I want love, just a different kind

I want love, won't break me down

Won't brick me up, won't fence me in

I want a love, that don't mean a thing

That's the love I want, I want love

So bring it on, I've been bruised

Don't give me love that's clean and smooth

I'm ready for the rougher stuff

No sweet romance, I've had enough

A man like me is dead in places

Other men feel liberated

But I want love, just a different kind

I want love, won't break me down

Won't brick me up, won't fence me in

I want a love, that don't mean a thing

That's the love I want, I want love

I want love, just a different kind

I want love, won't break me down

Won't brick me up, won't fence me in

I want a love, that don't mean a thing

That's the love I want, I want love
