In the hometown of the #MeToo movement, the event brought together a power-house of survivors, dignitaries, UN officials, gender experts and Hollywood celebrities.
Hosted by UN Women’s Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka and Goodwill Ambassador Nicole Kidman, the event celebrated the ground-breaking initiatives supported by the UN Trust Fund across the world over the past 22 years and highlighted the work that remains to end this human rights violation, which impacts one in three women worldwide. The UN Trust Fund is the only global grant-making mechanism dedicated to eradicating all forms of violence against women and girls and is managed by UN Women, on behalf of the UN system.

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a global campaign spanning from 25 November through 10 December, is taking place this year against the backdrop of an unprecedented global outcry. Millions have rallied behind the hashtag #MeToo and other campaigns, exposing the sheer magnitude of sexual harassment and other forms of violence that women everywhere suffer, every day. Breaking the silence is the first step to transforming the culture of gender-based violence.
At the heart of this year’s theme, “Leave No One Behind – End Violence against Women”, for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (25 November) and UNiTE Campaign’s observance of the 16 Days of Activism to End Violence against Women (25 November – 10 December), is the imperative to support those who are particularly vulnerable. The UNiTE Campaign is calling on everyone to join the movement to end violence against women, using the colour orange to make your action visible.

Pictured: Mesmerizing the event guests, actor and activist Gabriella Wright narrated the powerful story of Alice Mathe, a young woman survivor of violence from Zimbabwe, who is deaf. Unlike many others in her situation, Alice managed to access justice by taking her attacker to court, with the support of an UN Trust Fund initiative providing specialist services to girls and women with disabilities, and he is now in jail.

This event will bring together activists and comedians to discuss the ways in which comedy can push forward agendas such as #metoo and contemporary women’s rights movements, and how this effort can translate into meaningful change in women’s lives. The event will also showcase the work of UN Women and Mythos Labs in countering violent extremist recruitment narratives—and their understandings of gender—through comedy. It features a comedy set by renown comedian and actress Aparna Nancherla.
In early 2018, UN Women partnered with Mythos Labs to produce a series of comedy videos to counter the messaging of terrorist groups in the Asia region. Working with female comedians in South Asia and South-East Asia, these sketches challenge the narratives used by violent extremist groups and counter extremist ideology in the online space. While this work was originally piloted to prevent and counter violent extremism, the implications go far beyond this realm. Comedy can and is being used to promote broader themes of women’s empowerment and gender equality, by not just making us laugh, but by challenging stereotypes with a broad and engaged audience.
This project is part of UN Women’s Empowered Women, Peaceful Communities programme, which is funded by the Government of Japan. This programme works in the Asia Pacific region to challenge the gendered dynamics of violent extremism and reverse its growing trend, through prioritizing women’s rights, empowerment, participation and leadership—in national decision-making and at the community level.

In Mexico, several buildings and iconic monuments were lit in orange to raise awareness and mark 25 November, the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women, including the Angel of Independence, the Diana the Huntress’ Fountain, the Palace of Fine Arts, Mexico’s Senate of the Republic, the Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Affairs , Mexico's monument to the Revolution, as well as some iconic buildings in Puebla and Torreón. On 27 November, in partnership with Norwegian artist Lisa Bjorne and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, UN Women launched a week-long exposition on feminicide in Mexico and around the world. Leading up to the 16 Days, a number of activities were led by UN Women, including a media workshop, where representatives of some of the biggest media participated in a conversation with specialists from the government, social organizations and the academia, on topics such as feminicide, political violence and sexual violence. In collaboration with Ambulante Distribution and filmmaker Lucía Gajá, UN Women also co-hosted the premiere of the film "Batallas Íntimas" (Intimate Battles), which tells the stories of five women from around the world (Spain, USA, Finland, India and Mexico) who suffered violence perpetrated by their partners.
