One of these days I will invest in a decent photo editing programme other than the standard Microsoft Office as I know it would totally enhance these images.

"American Three-toed Woodpeckers have black and white barred backs, black wings, white breasts, black and white barred flanks, black tails with white outer tail feathers, and black heads with white moustchial and (usually) post-ocular stripes. Males have yellow crown-patches. Immature are smilar to adults, but with a yellow cap smaller than adult male. As their name asserts, they have three rather than four toes on each foot. American Three-toed Woodpeckers are not wary of humans, but they are also quiet and inconspicuous and can be difficult to see.

American Three-toed Woodpeckers breed in mature or old-growth boreal conifer forests, especially spruce, larch, fir, and pine. " -www.seattleaudubon.org/birdweb

"A large, dark jay of evergreen forests in the mountainous West. Steller’s Jays are common in forest wildernesses but are also fixtures of campgrounds, parklands, and backyards, where they are quick to spy bird feeders as well as unattended picnic items. When patrolling the woods, Steller’s Jays stick to the high canopy, but you’ll hear their harsh, scolding calls if they’re nearby. Graceful and almost lazy in flight, they fly with long swoops on their broad, rounded wings.

Like other jays, Steller’s Jays are bold, inquisitive, intelligent, and noisy. " -allaboutbirds.org

Pete McCracken, owner of Crack Press and type designer himself at the Portland Type Co, kindly invited Veronika to hold a two-day type design workshop in Porltand, Oregon, this July. The workshop was hosted by Wieden & Kennedy, an internationally recognized ad agency.

Students were asked to develop a few pre-defined letters prior to the workshop, which were then improved and expanded during the first day. Practical drawing was accompanied by a series of short theoretical lessons, designed to reaffirm the students' knowledge in basic practices of type design, such as optical corrections, countershapes and bezier curve drawing. During the second day students made good progress on their typefaces and the short lectures focused on the more technical aspects of type design, such as spacing, kerning and opentype features.

"The most widely distributed member of the rail family, the Common Gallinule inhabits marshes and ponds from Canada to Chile, from northern Europe to southern Africa, and across Asia to the Pacific. Vocal and boldly marked, the species can be quite conspicuous, sometimes using its long toes to walk atop floating vegetation." -allaboutbirds.org

"The Black-bellied Plover is the largest plover in North America and can be found along the coasts in winter northward to Massachusetts and British Columbia. It is the only American plover that has a hind toe on its foot. The hind toe, however, is so small that it is difficult to see in the field. " -allaboutbirds.org
