The Maryland Port Administration (MPA) has the responsibility of providing offsets and/or credits for Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) to the Baltimore Harbor; to be in compliance with the Baltimore Harbor TMDL for total nitrogen and total phosphorus, Maryland Environmental Service worked with MPA to determine suitable MPA-owned land to plant trees in an effort to establish a forested stream buffer within the critical area to assist in the removal of nutrients, as well as create wildlife habitat. This tree-planting effort will be used as an offset to the overall waste load allocation (WLA) given to MPA terminals.
The closed Hawkins Point Dredged Material Containment facility (DMCF) was found to be the best candidate for a tree-planting project. MES was awarded a grant from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Natural Filters Grant on behalf of MPA for this effort as well as a State cost share to re-grade and plant a 14.5-acre forested buffer along the Patapsco River in Baltimore. MES will conduct a 5-year monitoring plan on behalf of MPA to assure 100 percent survivability of the trees.

Having grown up in Richland, when I learned of the Hanford Declassification Project I was greatly interested. And even more interested when a search for the words "Nagasaki" and "Hiroshima" yielded no results in the database. It was curious to me that Nagasaki and Hiroshima had been excised so neatly from the declassified documents for this portion of the Manhattan Project. Thus my interest in taking the photos and using them as base for digital paintings, sometimes adding subcontext.
Description of the declassification project from the govt website:
“The Department of Energy, Richland Operations Office (RL) has aggressively implemented the commitments made by the Federal Government to openness in Government which was stated as a ‘Fundamental principle that an informed citizenry is essential to the democratic process and that the more the American people know about their Government, the better they will be governed. Openness in government is essential to accountability . . .’ RL is committed to responsible openness. The Hanford Declassification Project (HDP) was initiated by RL to declassify to the maximum possible extent all previously classified Hanford operations information (documents and photographs). There are over 77,000 declassified photographs of early Hanford (1943 - 1960) available… \These World War II and Cold War era photographs depict early Hanford construction and the employees/families who lived and build/operated the site.”
The plutonium for the bomb dropped on Nagasaki was manufactured at Hanford, which is now a toxic wasteland. The nearby town of Richland was hurridly constructed during WWII for the express purpose of the secret manufacture of plutonium.

I made a quick trip north to the Pisgah National Forest near Brevard, North Carolina where I photographed Kidneyleaf Twayblade orchid around this time last year. I was curious to see whether they had already bloomed. I did find a handfull of flowering plants, but it appears that I was a week or so late to see them at peak flowering. All of the orchid plants, as expected, were growing in the shade directly under large Rhododendron maximum shrubs next to a small stream.

U.S. Army National Guard Soldiers from South Carolina National Guard units across the state conduct a diagnostic Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) during the state-level Best Warrior Competition, Feb. 6, 2023 at McCrady Training Center in Eastover, South Carolina. The Best Warrior Competition is a five-day event where Soldiers challenge themselves and complete numerous events including a ruck march, weapons and medical lanes, weapons qualification and other events. Each Soldier is encouraged to push themselves to the limit during each event to attain a maximum score that will be tallied at the end of the competition. The competition ends with one Best Soldier and one Best Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO). The winners of this competition will compete in the regional-level Best Warrior Competition.
