The Chappel viaduct is 1,066 feet (325 m) long, has 32 arches of 30 feet (9 m) span and its maximum height is 75 feet (23 m). It currently takes the Marks Tey to Sudbury branch line, which connects regularly with trains to and from London's Liverpool Street Station.
The large number of construction workers needed for the project were housed, many with their families, in temporary huts built on Wakes Colne Green. Although some 5 or 6 million bricks are reckoned to have been used, the piers were hollow to save money and reduce weight. A further remarkable feature of the viaduct is that it is built on a gradient - the Sudbury end is 9.5 feet (2.9 m) higher than the Marks Tey end. According to William White’s History, Gazetteer and Directory of the County of Essex, 1848, the first stone was laid in September 1847. The viaduct took two years to build, and is thought to be the second largest brick-built structure in England.[3]

Last May an exciting thing happened. I bloomed Crinum minimum for the first time. The fragrance was fabulous. Something went awry upon opening and somehow the flower had trouble opening gracefully, as can be seen in these pictures. Regardless I am so glad to have experienced it and I look forward to the next time.
Crinum minimum is the smallest Crinum species in South Africa and is at least one of the smallest in the world. I actually think that it is the smallest, but if there is one smaller I hope someone will point it out to me. Leaves 6-10cm long and 1-2mm wide with entire margins emerge from this petite bulb. This species has singular adaptations, entirely unique among SA Crinum. It inhabits hot and dry places that have prolonged droughts where the only rain arrives via erratic thunderstorms which can occur from Oct to April (Northwest Province). The leaves behave in the manner of Ammocharis coranica, dying back if it is too dry but returning in the same season when more water is available. Also this species will remain completely dormant and never grow leaves unless rainfall is sufficient, skipping consecutive years.¹
Each plant only produces one flower from which usually only 1 seed (rarely up to 3) can be produced. Even under ideal conditions, just one flower can be produced per year. I grew this in Honolulu in both high and low rainfall areas (Kaimukī, 520mm rain pa and Upper Mānoa, 3550mm pa) in full sun and brought it indoors to dry out during its winter dormancy. Medium is pure pumice in a deep terracotta pot. In habitat temperatures can fall to 0°C on winter nights yet it bloomed for me with only maximum winter lows of 13°C.
This species' native range includes Zaire, Tanzania (Serengeti), Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa (Northwest Province, Mpumalanga).
I wrote about a closely related species' first bloom, Crinum acaule, with which this shares similarities.
