The Matthew is a replica of a caravel sailed by John Cabot in 1497 from Bristol to North America, presumably Newfoundland. After a voyage which had got no further than Iceland, Cabot left again with only one vessel, the Matthew, a small ship (50 tons), but fast and able. The crew consisted of only 18 people. The Matthew departed either 2 May or 20 May 1497. He sailed to Dursey Head (latitude 51°36N), Ireland, from where he sailed due west, expecting to reach Asia. However, landfall was reached in North America on 24 June 1497. His precise landing-place is a matter of much controversy, with Cape Bonavista or St. John's in Newfoundland the most likely sites.
Cabot went ashore to take possession of the land, and explored the coast for some time, probably departing on 20 July. On the homeward voyage his sailors incorrectly thought they were going too far north, so Cabot sailed a more southerly course, reaching Brittany instead of England. On 6 August he arrived back in Bristol.

Today was a rare November day in Toronto with loads of warm sunshine and shirtsleeves weather. My wife and I had joined friends on the patio of the campus coffee shop for a visit and to absorb the beautiful day. I saw this young man leaning against the windows a short distance away, listening to music through his headphones. He didn’t look in any hurry so I picked up my camera and excused myself for five minutes. He smiled and pulled out an earbud as I approached. That is always a good sign for someone doing street portraits. Yes, he knows Flickr and yes, he’d love to be part of my project. We shook hands. Meet Matthew.
I had him shrug off his backpack and put down his coffee cup and photographed him against the windows where I found him. “With or without the reflective glasses?” he asked. I suggested a few each way and in the end I liked this one with him looking over the lenses and his eyes showing. Matthew was clearly enthused about the project and the photos were taken in short order.
Our conversation was equally quick as I didn’t want to keep my wife and our friends waiting too long. It’s surprising how quickly some people can open up to a stranger when they feel trust and sense the project is a meaningful one. Matthew is from Toronto and at 24 is in his final semester. He will graduate with a degree in Philosophy. “Congratulations. What comes next?” He said he would like to use his hip hop music in some ways to reach young people and be a positive force in their lives. He writes poetry but feels hip hop is the way to reach the current young generation. He and some friends are working up their music but he doesn’t have anything on the web just yet.
When I asked him how his friends would describe him he thought for a moment and said "Probably that I'm really committed to social justice and that although I can be very logical, I'm also very connected to feelings and compassion." In my opinion, that combination could make Matthew a really good friend and citizen.
“What is the greatest challenge you’ve faced in life so far?” Matthew smiled and said “To tell the truth, it has been drug addiction. I was an addict for six years.” He quickly added with obvious pride “But I’ve been clean for 4 years.” Impressive. “How did you change your life?” I asked. “I went through a rehab program but I also had a lot of loving family support” he said. He wants to help other young people with similar issues make changes in their lives like he has.
His message to the world? “Life is as beautiful as you make it so be sure to see its beauty every day.” I asked if I was at liberty to share his story through the project and he said “By all means, if what I’ve been through could be helpful to someone else it would really please me to have it make a difference for someone.”
Thank you Matthew for sharing a few minutes with me and for sharing your story with The Human Family on Flickr.
In parting, we shook hands and Matthew said “I enjoyed this. I’m really glad we made this connection.” Me too.
This is my 94th submission to The Human Family Group on Flickr.

Follow-up: I received a very nice email from Matthew. He said:
"I think the picture turned out amazing! I agree, the black and white is a nice touch. I'd like to thank you for sending the picture and for the write up you did, I feel like you captured me perfectly with with your camera and your words. I looked through the rest of the project and I think you've got an awesome idea. Thanks for allowing me to be a part of it!"
It was my pleasure, Matthew. Thanks for writing.

As I am starting to wrap things up for my solo show at the Warrington Museum, I thought I would take the time to post some other work that has been keeping me busy earlier this year. Though the show I will be presenting is narrative based, here is the third of several commissions I executed this past spring.
