I have topped this nesting material up three times so far, and the tits, and I have even seen the robin, are still pulling out tuffs to use in their nests.

This enormous engine was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1941 for the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Ridge railroad, one of the primary iron ore hauling railroads in Minnesota. Iron ore is heavy, and combined with the railroads steep grades, made transporting this material from the mines to the Great Lakes a tricky task and required great amounts of power. Indeed, even the 2-8-8-0 locomotives - the most powerful ones of the DM&IR's roster - needed a helping hand.

The DM&IR decided to build eight engines that would be similar to the Western Pacific's 2-8-8-2's. These new engines were built with large fireboxes and all-weather cabs requiring a second axle to be added on the rear truck. This arrangement earned them the name "Yellowstones" and were the most powerful engines of this type, producing 140,000 lbf of tractive effort.

Although the 225 is called a "Yellowstone", footplate crews called it a "Mallet" after Swiss engineer Anatole Mallet. Mallet introduced locomotive articulation, in which the rear engine is rigidly attached to the main body and boiler of the locomotive, while the front engine rides on a separate truck attached to the rigid rear frame by a pivot so that it can swing from side to side.

The first eight were delivered in 1941 and performed beyond the DM&IR's expectations, who ordered another ten of these engines in 1943. The engines performed so well that several were loaned out to the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad for use on their Tennessee Pass route. The Rio Grande heralded the engines as being the best ones to operate.

The engines began fading into obscurity as dieselization took hold. After an accident on Tennessee Pass, the loaned engines were returned. Afterwards the DM&IR began scrapping them, only saving three of the later batch.

The DM&IR donated #225 to the city of Proctor on the 25th of March, 1963, and put on display at Charles E Carlson Park, where it remains today.

The Alfa Romeo 6C name was used on road, race, and sports cars produced between 1927 and 1954 by Alfa Romeo; the "6C" name refers to the six cylinders of the car's straight-six engine. Bodies for these cars were made by coachbuilders such as James Young, Zagato, Touring Superleggera, Castagna, and Pinin Farina. Beginning in 1933 there was also a 6C version with an Alfa factory body, built in Portello. In the early 1920s Vittorio Jano received a commission to create a lightweight, high performance vehicle to replace the Giuseppe Merosi designed RL and RM models. The car was introduced in April 1925 at the Salone dell' Automobile di Milano as the 6C 1500. It was based on Alfa's P2 Grand Prix car, using a single overhead cam 1,487 cc in-line six-cylinder engine, producing 44 horsepower. In 1928 the 1500 Sport was presented, which was the first Alfa Romeo road car with double overhead camshafts.

In the mid-1920s, Alfa's RL was considered too large and heavy, so a new development began. The 2-litre formula that had led to Alfa Romeo winning the Automobile World Championship in 1925, changed to 1.5-litres for the 1926 season. The 6C 1500 was introduced in 1925 at the Milan Motor Show. Series production started in 1927,[3] with the P2 Grand Prix car as a starting point. The Alfa Romeo 6C-1500 Super Sport features a twin overhead cam six cylinder engine with a bore of 62 mm and stroke of 82 mm, giving a displacement of 1487 cc, as against the P2's 1,987 cc, while supercharging was dropped. First versions were bodied by James Young and Carrozzeria Touring.

In 1928, the 6C Sport model was released, with a dual overhead-camshaft engine. Its sport version won many races, including the 1928 Mille Miglia. Total production was 3,000 (200 with DOHC engines). Ten examples of a supercharged (compressore, compressor) Super Sport variant were also built. Wikipedia

“Demonstration satellite solar power station – the materials for which would be carried into low earth orbit by Space Shuttle – is 1000 feet square and 25 feet thick. An operational station would be placed in geosynchronous orbit (about 22,000 miles out in space), from where it would beam a continuous stream of microwave energy to earth.”

American manned space station. Study 1975. North American Rockwell's 'Austere Modular Space Station' was in contrast to more grandiose schemes in the mid-1970's.

Status: Study 1975.

The most important application in those days was constructing large space structures, e.g., extremely large communications satellites, giant 20-kilometer-wide solar power satellites or even giant orbiting space colonies for millions of people. Contemporary space station studies such as Rockwell's and Boeing's were closely tied to this objective. NASA's Outlook for Space report from 1975 recommended a number of possible goals, including development of a 12-man space station in low Earth orbit by 1988 and a similar station in lunar orbit by 1994.

What appears to be the original ‘Austere Modular Space Station’ posting.

I’m sure also by Ted Brown:

www.friends-partners.org/mwade/craft/amsation.htm

An excellent one-two info combo from two disparate sources. Don’cha just love it when a ‘plan’ comes together?

However, while that’s all fine & dandy, what’s truly important, interesting & notable here is:

1.) That it’s by Ted Brown.

2.) That it’s part of an interwoven evolution, sequence & stream of variants and derivatives of similar & related works by Mr. Brown. I don’t recall identifying/recognizing anything like this pertaining to other artist’s works.

3.) Furthermore, within the following wonderful tribute video by Mr. Brown’s amazing & gracious daughter, Angela Carole Brown:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-w4MHqTx5A

Commencing at the 2:54 mark, an extremely similar variant is shown.

And then, at the 3:24 mark, the close-up of Mr. Brown and an assistant would appear to be of them working on the details of the Manned Remote Workstation (that possibly being Grumman proprietary terminology) depicted in his 1980 “Space Products” mural, to which I’ve provided multiple links in the “Comment” section below.

Fascinating, at least to me.

Those who have seen my last couple of postings (Red-bellied Woodpeckers) may recognize the stump this Starling is sitting on. Having finally retired, I now have the time to concentrate on taking pictures.

I have now visited this spot in the woods for the last week, spent 4-6 hours sitting in the Ram (yes, I'm inherently lazy) and have taken about 12,000 images. Truth be told, I'm starting to see this stump in my dreams arrggghhh!

However, the action has been unreal. I will share a number of "stump" images in the next few days. To me its a lesson in patience - pick a spot and the birds will come.
