River Trent flooding at Gunthorpe, Nottinghamshire.
09 February 2026. The River Trent at Gunthorpe showing it strength and potential destruction. Very clear to see in person, the speed and power of the current at this point. Though pehaps not on any particular photograph. I kept well clear of the waters edge for obvious reasons. It's set to get worse than this over the coming days as more heavy rainfall is predicted.
The area features the historic Gunthorpe Bridge, a vital crossing, and has a long history of river traffic.
The name Gunthorpe refers not to guns but to a Viking woman. Gunnhildr was a common Viking female name, notably in the family of King Cnut, and could be shortened to Gunni. The name Gunthorpe combines Gunnhildr with the Old Norse element þorp meaning 'outlying farm/settlement'.

Lake dwelling settlements are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Unteruhldingen. The sunken village of Unteruhldingen shows everyday life in the Stone and Bronze Age!
Pfahlbauten am Bodensee in Unteruhldingen.
I was able to check off a few boxes here. I haven't shot anything on the NECR since before the take over by the G&W and never any movements over the Millers River bridge. As luck would have it while waiting for a PAS crew to arrive for 27E at Farleys, train 611 came south with a matching trio of orange 6 axles bound for Palmer. The 10mph slow order across the bridge with some brilliant morning light made everything come together for this shot.

Brukar inte ta några makro kort (pga att jag inte ha den rätta utrustningen förutom en bilig "reverse ring" - vet ej vad den heter på Svenska). Men här kommer mitt bidrag till veckans temat - makro.
Don't normally dabble with macro photography (really don't have the gear for it except a cheap reverse ring) but as it was the weekly challenge for fotosondag I thought I'd give it a go.
The photo is of a match just as it ignites.

The image was illuminated by two Nikon SB900 speedlights placed 80° CL/CR, two-feet away from and 16-inches above the subjects. The speedlights were fired in Manual mode @ full power through Neewer 24" x 24" soft boxes.
The SB900's were triggered by three PocketWizard Plus X's.
Lens: Tokina AT - X M100 AF PRO D (AF 100mm f / 2.8 Macro) with a 36mm extension tube attached.

Macro Mondays: Perfect Match
Wisconsin Central T040 was doing its thing on a nice sunny morning in 2000. The daily parade of SD45s on the Chicago Subdivision was a nice reliable way to expose some chromes back in the day.
The 6640 was built by EMD in 1966 for the Santa Fe and made its way to the WC in the mid-1990's and after the Canadians took over in 2001, the 6640 was kicked to the curb. I suspect it is no longer amongst the living.
