Heroica Matamoros, more commonly known as Matamoros, is a city in the northeast of the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. It is located at 25°52′N, 97°30′W, across the Rio Grande from the Brownsville, Texas. In the 2005 census the city of Matamoros had a population of 422,711.
Heroica Matamoros is about 621 miles away from Mexico City and 354 miles from Houston, Texas. The city was renamed for Independence War hero Mariano Matamoros in the early 19th century. The city also holds the "H" for "Heroic" or "Heroica" before the name because the city was defended from invaders trying to take it over.

Art and Culture Center of Hollywood to Present Francesco LoCastro,
Peter Hammar, Jessy Nite, Dana Lauren Goldstein,
Gustavo Matamoros, and Gustavo Oviedo
Hollywood, Fla. – On Saturday, Sept. 21, works by Francesco LoCastro, Peter Hammar, Jessy Nite, Dana Lauren Goldstein, and Gustavo Matamoros go on display at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood. The artists’ reception for these exhibitions will be held on Friday, Sept. 20 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Center. This reception is free for members and $10 for non-members. Donation bar and light refreshments will be served. The reception will feature projection of the video “Reef Ecosystems of South Florida” and zine release by Gustavo Oviedo/13:1. These exhibitions will be shown through Sunday, Oct. 27.
Italian-born Francesco LoCastro grew up in Germany and has been active in the South Florida art scene for more than a decade. For his exhibition Advent, the internationally renowned artist delves further into his Geometry series with a new body of mixed-media work and video animation. These latest pieces showcase unorthodox painting techniques that involve the intricate layering of pigment and resin to achieve a heightened sense of dimension and depth.
What at first glance appears to be the result of countless hours spent with graphic design software is revealed at closer examination to be meticulously handcrafted combinations of acrylic, spray paint, epoxy resin and even gold leaf applied on wood.
These colorful compositions depict a kaleidoscopic vision, dense with movement and a combination of explosiveness and strict order, vibrancy and dreaminess, power and release. The accompanying video animations explore a further imagining (expansion) of the paintings as three-dimensional environments. Feeling frenetic and alive, LoCastro’s bright and shifting allegorical architectures present fleeting moments of harmony and dissonance as an immersive experience.
For his first major solo show in Florida, Swedish artist Peter Hammar’s multimedia exhibition Zeitgeber will comment on the different chronologies at play in our life. Translated as “time giver,” a zeitgeber is any stimulus outside that syncs the body’s internal clock with the 24-hour day and the 12-month year. Examples include light, temperature, and pharmaceutical manipulation. Today’s life is a constant state of stimulation, an unsustainable barrage of information and distraction that wears down the human body and mind.
New work by South Florida-based artist Jessy Nite in Behavioral Patterns will explore the end result of repeated behaviors through the artist’s signature lens of faded tropical dreams. Nite’s bold narratives speak through a variety of “controlled substances,” and the breadth of the collection is reflected in her vibrant color palate, which is expertly crafted in a variety of mediums.
Officially launching the Center’s new The Landing showcase, the exhibition Black Eyes will feature never-seen-before images by acclaimed documentary style photographer Dana Lauren Goldstein, who has shot for international magazines such as VICE, ID, and PDN (Photo Daily News), among others. Highly influenced by everyday life, the New York native and recent Hollywood resident draws inspiration mainly from paintings, film, and music.
Gustavo Matamoros’ semi-permanent site-specific sound piece Poem (20130700) in the Center’s library is inspired by the idea of seeing with our mind’s ear. Matamoros is a sound artist and composer who lives and works in South Florida.
Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. Free parking is available at the Center, which is located at 1650 Harrison St. General admission to the Center’s galleries are $7 for adults; $4 for students, seniors, and children ages 4 to 17; and free to Center members as well as children under the age of 4. For more information on these exhibitions, please call 954.921.3274 or visit ArtAndCultureCenter.org.
