This is part of the reredos in a side altar of Segovia Cathedral. It shows St James the apostle as 'Matamoros'!
In the legendary battle of Clavijo in 845, Santiago descended from the sky mounted on a white horse, having in one hand a snow-white banner on which was displayed and in the other a sword ("En un cavallo blanco con una sena blanca et grand espada reluzient en la mano"). The forces of King Ramiro I defeated the far superior army of Abderraman II, and according to tradition St. James alone killed sixty thousand Moors. From this time on Santiago was regarded as the patron saint of Spain, and the special protector of Christian soldiers in wars against infidels or pagans.
In the 11th century, St James began to be called Santiago Matamoros (St James, Slayer of Moors), and the war cry became "Santiago y Cierra España" (St James, and close ranks,
Spain!).
Today, 25 July, is his feast day and he is patron of Spain. May he continue to protect Spain and all Christian people from spiritual peril.
I can't help thinking that one of the intended messages of this statue was to remind the indigenous people that the Spaniards had crushed the Moors and were capable of doing the same to them.

This fierce depiction of St James as 'Matamoros', Slayer of Moors, comes from the Alcazar in Segovia.
Today, 25 June, is his feast day, and my sermon for today can be read here.
