"Whoever hopes to be freed of his chains through James, let him acclaim him for the miracles which he brings about in time of dire peril"

My sermon for the feast of St James the Great, commenting on this distinctively Spanish depiction of St James as 'Slayer of Moors' can be found here.

A "villa Tauriaca" was given to the Bishop of Le Mans already in 585 by some Alderic. At that time probably a chapel existed here. The portal seen today dates to the 12th. century - and it is unusual, as it does have tympana in the flanking arches. Modifications were made, when the church got fortified in the 16th century, but meanwhile the portal is pretty much back to the original state.
It is claimed, that some of the carvings may be older than the church and may have been part of the earlier (merovingien?) church.
A very weathered equestrian is in the center of the left tympanum. Such statues are not very common. Further north are a few (Surgères, Melle, Parthenay-le-Vieux, Airvault), where under the hoof of horese is a small person. It is widely believed, that the statues depict Constantine the Great, trampling down Roman heathenism.
In Southern France (eg. Oloron St. Marie) and Northen Spain similar statues are seen as Saint Jaques ("Matamoro"), fighting the muslims on the Hispanic peninsula and so supporting the reconquista

St James is also known as Santiago Matamoros -- St. James the Moor Slayer. This image recalls Ramiro of Castile's victory over the Muslims at the Battle of Clavijo (ca. 844). Christian participants in the battle said they saw St. James riding with them, slaying the enemy on every side. Santiago Matamoros became the patron saint of Christian Spain, and an iconography developed in which the horseback saint raises his sword in the midst of the fray, with dead and dying Moors at his feet.
This depiction of the saint is from Salamanca Cathedral.

During the Battle of Clavijo, it is said that Saint James the Greater miraculously appeared to provide assistance to an outnumbered Spanish Christian army, helping them gain victory against the Moors who had started their conquest of Hispania in 711; the battle is placed between 834 and 844, about 800 years after the death of St James.
According to legend, St James, appeared as a warrior on a white horse amidst the Spanish army, wielding a white banner. Upon seeing him, the Christian army cried out “¡Dios ayuda a Santiago!” which translates to “God save St James!”
The Moors were routed, earning St James the title Matamoros or “Moor-slayer”, and he was long venerated as the patron Saint of Spain.
This statue of the Matamoros is in the museum of the St Agustin church in the Intramuros of Manila, the Philippines.

Despite modern calls to inter-religious connections or dialogue of civilizations, the main point of contact between christendom and islam has been war.
Here you have Santiago (Saint James), slaying muslims in battle, in an iconic gesture called Santiago Matamoros (the Moor-slayer).
