quiet morning at the St Marys riverfront park

At the top of the 199 steps from the town to the Abbey, the church of St.Mary is a favourite destination for the Goths that descend upon Whitby a couple of times a year.

this is Marys shell cleveleys

The view from the rocky foreshore below the watch house at Seaton Sluice looking across Collywell Bay to the distant St Mary's Lighthouse as the sun started to appear above the horizon. The motion of the rough grey sea contrasts with the flat orange sky with whispy clouds illuminated yellow by the rising sun.

The Sculpture was placed on the beach in September 2013 around the time my husband made his last trip there before dying from a brain tumour. Since then I have been watching and recording how the once pristine metal of the shell has gradually been colonised by barnacles and seaweed obscuring the text engraved within.

This past Sunday was another wonderful day out adventuring! And a first for us too. We left my driveway, turning right with no particular place in mind to go and came back into my driveway 12 hours later from the opposite direction, never crossing our path once in the whole journey. One very large circle!

Mary's Rock Tunnel is on Skyline Drive in the Shenandoah National Park. We drove nearly the whole length of it hunting for bears .... racking up yet another failed attempt at seeing one! LOL Mary's Rock is also a favorite hiking trail within the park and this pull out is a fantastic place to watch the sunrise.

Highland Mary, or Mary Campbell to give her her proper name was born in the Dunoon area in 1763. Mary earned her living by way of domestic service, she moved to Ayrshire and was employed in the Mauchline household of Gavin Hamilton, Robert Burns's patron and friend. She did not stay long in Mauchline, but long enough to attract the attention of and be courted by Robert Burns during a period when he was estranged from Jean Armour.

They decided on emigration to Jamaica and in preparation Mary returned to her home to organise her affairs but unfortunately she died of a fever (typhus) in Greenock (where she is buried).

The lovers were never to meet again following their farewell embraces on the banks of the River Ayr.

A statue at Failford in Ayrshire commemorates the spot of that final farewell.

Burns led a life replete with incident but this surely was one of the most romantic, poignant and tragic of them all.

Tucked along the Going-to-the-Sun Road, St. Mary Falls in Glacier National Park is a must-see. A short hike leads through the forest to turquoise water cascading through a rocky canyon—a refreshing reminder of the park’s wild, untamed beauty.

Saint Mary Lake is the second-largest lake in Glacier National Park, Montana. It is located on the east side of the park at an elevation of 4,484 feet (1,367 m). Going-to-the-Sun Road parallels the lake along its north shore.

The lake is 9.9 miles (15.9 km) long and 300 feet (91 m) deep with a surface area of 3,923 acres (15.88 km2). The waters of the lake rarely rise above 50 °F (10 °C) and are home to various species of trout. During the winter, the lake is often frozen over with ice up to 4 feet (1.2 m) thick.

The opening scene of the 1980 Stanley Kubrick film The Shining was shot at Saint Mary Lake.

Wild Goose Island, barely seen in this photo on the direction of the central tallest spruce, rises a mere 14 feet (4.3 m) above the lake. The island is dwarfed by the lake and surrounding mountains, yet it is of one of the most frequently photographed locations along the Going-to-the-Sun Road. (Wikipedia)

This model was built for a British television documentary ‘What sank the Mary Rose?’ It was used for experiments, varying the loading of the gun and crew to see the effect. In the end, the overloading and a gust of wind made it keel over, creating a dramatic film of the sinking.

The man-of-war was a relatively new concept, and ship design was still evolving to accommodate cannons. In 1536 Mary Rose underwent a major refit to accommodate an increased armament, raised from 42 heavy cannons, including five bronze muzzle-loaders, and two swivel guns to 30 heavies –13 of them bronze – and 66 swivels. This raised its displacement to 700 tons.

St. Mary's Island Lighthouse is a historic lighthouse located on St. Mary's Island, which is a small uninhabited island off the coast of Northumberland in northeast England. The lighthouse was built in 1898 and has been in operation ever since, helping to guide ships safely through the treacherous waters of the North Sea.

The lighthouse is a cylindrical tower made of brick and stands about 44 meters (144 feet) tall. Its light is visible for up to 26 nautical miles, making it an important navigation aid for ships traveling along the coast.

St. Mary's Island Lighthouse was fully automated in 1984, meaning that there are no longer any lighthouse keepers stationed there. However, the lighthouse is still maintained and operated by Trinity House, which is the organization responsible for lighthouses and other navigational aids around the coast of England, Wales, and the Channel Islands.

Today, St. Mary's Island Lighthouse is a popular tourist attraction and visitors can climb to the top of the tower to enjoy spectacular views of the coastline and the North Sea. There is also a visitor center on the island that provides information about the history of the lighthouse and the important role it has played in keeping ships safe for over a century.

Standing there and realizing that this is where Family Torrance drove up into the mountains for their winter retreat was eye-opening. I had always wondered where that was. The lodge, of course, was on Mt. Hood and the interiors were filmed on the east coast, I believe.

Please, although I appreciate the gesture, no icons.

This is one of the most amazing places I've been. A truly wonderful work of art.

The Watts Cemetery Chapel or Watts Mortuary Chapel is a chapel in a Modern Style (British Art Nouveau style) version of Celtic Revival in the village cemetery of Compton in Surrey. The designer was Mary Fraser-Tytler, an artist resident in the village, who married the painter and sculptor George Frederic Watts. While the overall architectural structure is loosely Romanesque Revival, the lavish decoration in terracotta relief carving and paintings is Celtic Revival, on an unusually large scale. According to the local council, it is "a unique concoction of art nouveau, Celtic, Romanesque and Egyptian influence with Mary's own original style".

The Queen Mary is a steam cruise liner built in the 1930's in Scotland. The ship was in service from 1936 to 1967. Since that time, it has been converted to a floating hotel and museum in Long Beach,California permanently.

RMS Queen Mary 2 (also referred to as the QM2) is a British transatlantic ocean liner. The ship was officially named Queen Mary 2 by Queen Elizabeth II in 2004 after the first RMS Queen Mary of 1936. Queen Mary had in turn been named after Mary of Teck, consort of King George V. With the retirement of Queen Elizabeth 2 in 2008, Queen Mary 2 is the only transatlantic ocean liner in regular service between Southampton, England, and New York City, United States. The ship is also used for cruising (here seen in DUbai), including an annual world cruise.
