Akaroa Harvest Festival..It looked like it would rain but luckily it didn't. April 2018 New Zealand.
This image shows a section of mouse bone near a fracture, with marrow full of red blood cells at the bottom and healthy bone on top of that (tan). New bone (green) and cartilage (dark blue) are in the upper layer. Researchers suggest that chronic inflammation is the reason that bones do not heal as well we age, as opposed to simply the passage of time.

On Friday, April 29th, Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro together with Christopher D. Hillyer, M.D., President and CEO of New York Blood Center (NYBC) and Howard P. Milstein, Chairman of NYBC’s Board of Trustees added the names of 8 FDNY bone marrow donors to the “Honor Roll of Life”. This year marks the 12th annual “Honor Roll of Life” induction ceremony for the New York City Fire Department - the single largest group of bone marrow and stem cell donors for NYBC.
Today’s ceremony also reunited two FDNY members, Firefighter Michael Wilson of Ladder 166 and Firefighter Fredrick Perdue of Engine 67 with their bone marrow recipients.
Bone marrow pulmonary embolism (BMPE) is a potentially serious condition that can occur after trauma.
BMPE usually occurs after severe traumatic events, such as bone fractures or crush injuries. The trauma disrupts the integrity of the bone marrow, leading to the release of fat droplets and elements of the marrow into the bloodstream. In bone marrow embolism (BME) the pulmonary vessels are the most affected. However, some cases of BME were reported in the absence of trauma. Options include cancer in which bone marrow metastasis is a suggestive cause, liposuction, drug abuse, pulmonary hypertension, cardiac massage, and heart failure. Although usually seen in autopsy lungs in association with rib fractures associated with cardiopulmonary resuscitation, bone marrow emboli are sometimes seen in surgical lung specimens obtained following intraoperative rib fracture to permit access.
The embolus is mainly composed of bone marrow elements including marrow adipocytes. Small-sized pulmonary arteries are the most affected.

a friend recently donated his marrow and motivated me to do the same. got my kit in the mail this week and swabbed my cheek to collect a DNA sample. After sending it in they will enter it into a database to look for matches and hopefully at some point I'll match some and be able to donate.

Courgette is the British, and particularly the New Zealand, name for zucchinis. People in the UK may refer to it as marrows. Zucchinis come in many shapes and a few different colors. People are likely most familiar with those that are long green oblongs, resembling a cucumber, but round or yellow ones can be found in many stores. Notes: I have to admit, I've never really been that big of a fan of bone marrow. I find the stuff too greasy and gloppy. However, ever since I first read about Blue RIbbon's bone marrow many years ago, I've been wanting to try it.
Three things that made Blue Ribbon's bone marrow a treat:
1. They brought out plenty of toast. They actually brought out a whole plate of toast - but it wouldn't fit on our already over-crowded table, so we dumped them into the half-emptied bread basket and the server tood the bread plate away. I but a couple of slices, which were perfectly toasted and warm on this plate just for show.
2. Sea salt. They served course sea salt on the side. After slathering the sloppy marrow across the bread (which makes the perfect mop for this dish), I dusted the toast with the sea salt - *salty crunch* - what could be better??
3. The red wine sauce. Rich, thick, complex and wonderful. At first, we scooped the marrow out of the top of the bones, but we soon discovered that this dish was better enjoyed by pushing the marrow out the bottom end and mixing it with the wine sauce before spreading it on the bread. OMG.

Man i love this song, there's still a big queue on getting most of my videos up on vimeo but I thought I'd share this little taster snippet video of St Vincent doing Marrow. It's cute because there were some sound issues going on which Annie had to signal to the sound guy, twas funny seeing it in action but afterwards Annie keeps her cool and rocks out at the chorus, moar on that when I have the time to upload the stuff :)
