This bedding Dahlia has come up with some strange petal markings this year. They have survived 5 winters now just left in the ground & never lifted. Proves how mild our winters have become.
The Gentoo penguin is a medium-sized species of penguin that is found on the rocky islands of the sub-Antarctic Ocean. Gentoo penguins are distinguished by the white "bonnet-like" marking across the top of their heads, and are most closely related to the Adelie and Chinstrap penguins.
Gentoo Penguins nest in early June. Their nests consist of a pile of stones that are roughly 20 cms (8 inches) high and 25 cms (10 inches) in diameter. The female will lay 2 eggs and the incubation is shared by both parents, alternating daily.
After 34 - 36 days the eggs will hatch and the chicks will remain in the nest for 30 days before they form creches. After 80 - 100 days the chicks will molt into sub-adult plumage and venture out into the sea.
It is unusual for both chicks to survive, the one that hatches first is usually stronger. However, if food is in abundance sometimes they will both survive. If Gentoo Penguins lose their first clutch of eggs they are able to lay a second clutch in the same season.
We went camping in Ocotillo Wells Friday night out in the desert and played with some long exposures. It's always fun on a summer night to set up a tripod and use something like a cell phone or iPod to do some image writing.
This one my son Nathaniel did with his iPod Touch by walking around shining it on the ground, less than a foot off the ground.
30 second exposure.

A father and his daughter wait, perhaps for mom, at QV Mall in Melbourne.
I guess it is better to say that the dad is waiting since the kid has no concept of time or "later". Just "now". I find that fascinatiing.

The church hosts also a marking in the form of a meridian line inlaid in the paving of the left aisle in 1655; it was calculated and designed by the astronomer Giovanni Domenico Cassini, who was teaching astronomy at the University. A meridian line does not indicate the time: instead, with its length of 66.8 metres (219 ft) it is one of the largest astronomical instruments in the world, allowing measurements that were for the time uniquely precise. The sun light, entering through a 27.07 mm (1.066 in) hole placed at a 27.07 m (88.8 ft) height in the church wall, projects an elliptical image of the sun, which at local noon falls exactly on the meridian line and every day is different as to position and size. The position of the projected image along the line allows to determine accurately the daily altitude of the sun at noon, from which Cassini was able to calculate with unprecedented precision astronomical parameters such as the obliquity of the ecliptic, the duration of the tropical year and the timing of equinoxes and solstices. On the other hand, the size of the projected sun's image, and in particular its rate of variation during the year, allowed Cassini the first experimental verification of Kepler's laws of planetary motion.
Cassini and Domenico Guglielmini published an illustrated account of how the meridian line was accomplished in 1695.

All cats love the warmth of the sun. She had been scent marking by arching her back and rubbing back & shoulders on the leaves. She also raised her tail & sprayed her scent. This was the moment she paused and raised her head to the sun. There were no birds or squirrels overhead that I could see at that time.

The aircraft referenced, LN-DHY, is a De Havilland Vampire FB.52 owned by the Norwegian Air Force Historical Squadron. It previously flew with the Swiss Air Force under the serial number J-1196. As of 2022, it has been temporarily painted with the Royal Air Force (RAF) markings WA123 for air show appearances, though it never served with the RAF in this capacity.
Key facts about the aircraft:
Original service: It was built in 1952 under license in Switzerland and served with the Swiss Air Force as J-1196 until 1990.
Norwegian ownership: The aircraft was acquired by the Norwegian Air Force Historical Squadron in 2011 and is based at Rygge Air Base in Norway.
RAF markings: The temporary WA123 markings honor the RAF's heritage and have been used for appearances at events like the Duxford Air Shows in 2022.
Other markings: The aircraft has also been painted in other historical liveries. In 2023, it wore Italian Air Force markings to commemorate the force's centenary. In 2024, it was seen in Canadian markings to celebrate the RCAF's 100th anniversary
The entry "Canadair CL-13B Sabre 6 FU-675 USAF F-AYSB" refers to a specific, airworthy Canadair CL-13B Sabre Mk. 6 warbird that is currently owned by Mistral Warbirds in France. The letters and numbers in the query represent its various military and civilian identities throughout its history.
Identity breakdown
Canadair CL-13B Sabre Mk. 6: This is the aircraft's type and model. It is a version of the North American F-86 Sabre built under license in Canada by Canadair. The Mk. 6 is considered the best of the production Sabres, featuring an upgraded Avro Canada Orenda 14 turbojet engine.
01675 / FU-675 (USAF): These markings are the U.S. Air Force camouflage scheme that the aircraft has worn at airshows, such as the 2022 Royal International Air Tattoo. The "USAF" designation in the query is for this paint scheme, not its original operator.
F-AYSB: This is the aircraft's current civilian registration.
C/N 1675: This is the aircraft's construction number, confirming its original identity.
Operational history
West German Air Force: The aircraft was built in 1958 and originally served with the West German Air Force under the serial number S6-1675. It later carried other German codes, including JD-103, BB-284, and KE-104.
United States: The aircraft was later acquired by Flight Systems Inc. in Mojave, California, and operated with the registration N80FS between 1979 and 1997.
Mistral Warbirds: The aircraft is now owned by the France-based Mistral Warbirds and is based at Avignon airport. It has been showcased at numerous European airshows in its USAF-style camouflage.

The markings on dragonflies tend to become less and less pronounced with age which is why this male black darter, or black meadowhawk in the US (Sympetrum danae) has all but lost the yellow lines on the side of the thorax.
It had me a bit confused at first and I actually needed a bit of help figuring out which species it was even though the black darter undoubtedly is my most photographed dragonfly species.
This particular one was hanging out on a small cliff by the lake Trehörningen (the Triangle) in the Paradiset nature reserve on September 1st, a day warm enough to go swimming which isn't the usual September activity in Sweden. Anyways, the only way to get to this one was to inch my way on my stomach down the cliff so my feet were significantly higher up than my head (and my model here).

Erbil is marking the 28th anniversary of the city’s uprising with a 10-day long festival.
The ‘Azadi [freedom] and Newroz [New Year]’ festival kicked off in front of Erbil citadel on Monday with music and dancing.
“It’s joy and happiness. These events are getting better every year. Thanks to God that the crises are ending and the people will have better life,” said singer Arab Osman of the event.
The wave of uprisings against the Baathist regime of Saddam Hussein started in Raniya on March 5, 1991, spreading to Sulaimani on March 7, Erbil on the 11th, Duhok on the 14th, and culminating in Kirkuk on the 21st, coinciding with the Newroz festival...

NEWROZA WE PÎROZ BE!
Happy Newroz, Kurdish New Year, but also for all other Iranian peoples (Persians, Afghans, Tajiks ...), Newroz celebrates the Spring, the Rebirth of Life and Nature, and for Kurds it symbolizes the Freedom, in fact according to the kurdish legend, Kawa the Blacksmith killed the evil king Zohak and freed from tyranny all peoples of the empire. That's why Newroz is also the National Kurdish Day.

The Spring Peeper is a small frog that is generally under 4 cm in body length. Individuals range in colour from tan, grey, rusty brown or dark brown. There is a conspicuous dark X-shaped marking on the back, a triangular or V-shaped marking on the head between the eyes, cross bands on the hind legs, and a dark stripe that extends from the snout, through the eye and part way down the side to the groin. The belly is white or cream-coloured and the inner thighs are light to dark yellow. The skin is granular in texture and individuals have small but obvious toe pads and lack webbing between the toes. The call is a single high-pitched “peep” which is repeated.
For many people in North America, the first calls of the peeper mark the return of the spring.

During the week, my beloved 50mm 1.8 crashed to my hardwood floor and shattered into pieces. Today I went out to buy a new 50mm 1.4, and came home with that, a Canon 5D MarkII and a 24-105 lens. NO BIG DEAL. It wasn't as spontaneous as it seems. I had been thinking about updating my gear for a while, and I had talked to my parents, and my friends and teachers at school about it. So today I finally did it. And I couldnt be happier. This was my first portrait taken with this beautiful camera body and lens. Working with a full frame is so wonderful. This portrait isn't visually intriguing, but its special to me :) It is the starting point of a new beginning of endless opportunity.

Thought I'll add this detail of a branch of one of the "Australian Weeping Fig" trees in Singapore's National Orchid Garden - part of the smooth bark is peeling off (similar to Eucalyptus trees) and various graffiti markings have been etched on it too.
