"Marke Bahnwärter - bei jedem Zuge raus", 1916. Unfortunately, the pun is untranslatable. An early work by A. Paul Weber, who later became a well-known artist.

Thanks to the popularity of the Amphawa floating marke among the local residents, particularly from nearby super congested Bangkok, the market has expanded way beyond the boats on the canal and now surrounds much of the surrounding streets as well. I have just come down from the pedestrian bridge you saw in the previous picture, but rather than turn left along the river, I am now walking into the market. It has rained overnight, and the weather is still a bit cloudy and soggy, and although this market opens much later in the day, it is showing signs of life even at that hour: 08:30, with many vendors just opening up or setting up shop. There are many market stalls which sell a variety of goods like souvenirs and teneral tourist kitsch, small cafes or food stalls, ice-cream shops, and many more. I found many stalls selling salted fish packed on styrofoam trays (pictures later on in this album) and what appeared to be fish shaped stress balls. Most souvenir stores usually sell clothes, toys and accessories for ladies. (Amphawa Floating Market, Thailand, Oct. 2018)

A Marke Lehmann wind up toy from the turn of the century. Of course I mean the previous century. Amazingly, it still works! Wind it up and it goes around, in a circle, throwing the cowboy off the horse. If anyone knows anything about these old toys, please drop me a line.

Sixteen GR9 Harrier aircraft are pictured flying in a diamond formation to marke the retirement of the famous aircraft after 41 years of service.

A formation of 16 Harriers took off from RAF Cottesmore and took to the skies of Lincolnshire.

Brought into service in 1969 and based at RAF Wittering, this British aircraft was designed to take off and land both vertically and on a short runway.

Well known for its role in the Falklands War, the Harrier went on to serve in many other conflicts including in Bosnia and Iraq in the 1990s.

The RAF and Royal Navy Harrier squadrons joined forces in 2000 to form Joint Force Harrier, based at RAF Cottesmore. These combined Harrier squadrons served in Sierra Leone, the second Gulf War and most recently Afghanistan.

I had the coolest rejection today - a very smartly dressed gentleman that kept walking for about 20 yards until I sparked his interest enough for him to stop but alas no ... but boy did he smile the best smile throughout ;).

Ten minutes later though I walked past Marke and instantly impressed by his style also I turned on my heels no more than a couple of metres past him and asked if I could take his photo. Marke looked really taken aback but asked why so I explained and no sooner had I mentioned the word "project" and he was holding his hand out gesturing for me to carry on. I took a handful of shots and explained a bit more about the purpose behind the project. When I asked Marke what he was up to there was no stopping him and he talked quite enthusiastically about what he was doing today and moreover why Newcastle was special to him.

Marke is from York originally but lived in London for 37 years. He has taken the day off work (Bank Manager) today to come shopping in Newcastle - a city he has frequented many times as a child as both his grandparents are from Newcastle. His Grandfather used to run a business in the 1920s quite close to where we were stood and whilst I'm not 100% certain I think that he said it was a Chandlery.

Whilst Marke was talking I became aware of a lady off to the side that was watching quite intently and when I glanced back a bit later and she was still looking I asked Marke if that was his wife that I was keeping him away from at which point he replied that it was and held his hand out so I shook it and thanked him for his time. Marke walked off to be with his wife and I could just make out her asking "what was that all about?". I have no idea what Marke's reply was.

I went and sat down immediately after he had gone and reviewed the photographs on my camera. As I was sat there I saw Mr Stylish Rejection walking down the street in my general direction - he politely turned down one of the many charity workers (not my #65 Matt although he was only a stone's throw away) and walked on. As he passed close by he spotted me and broke into that smile again and waved - I waved back and couldn't help but smile from ear to ear as well. I had a good "100 Strangers" day today!

Marke, thank you very much for taking some time out to talk to me today - I hope that you had a good day as well and that you like the photograph.

------------------------------------------------------

This house was used as a sheep house around the year 1900. At the southern end are remnants of a privy. Notice how the walls are constructed of large stone slabs.

Picture 35 to 39 belongs together and is the same house.

Text available to all images from Björsjöås:

Björsjöås or Åsen as it is often called, is one of the old farms in Vättlefjäll. The name comes from the farm location on a ridge near lake Björsjön. All the farms up here is the so-called isolated farms which are each separately and do not form a village. The farms in Vättlefjäll is known since the 1500s. Probably they were there before.

The farmers who settled here in the mountain area farmed in a small area around the farm. Inside this stone fence low fields and meadows, the so-called infields. Outside were the animals grazing on the so-called outfields. This was common for all the farms in Vättlefjäll and also for villages down at Bergum plain.

Here in Björsjöås only the residential building remains. It was built in the late 1800s and was rebuilt in the 1930s. The old farm was located on the hill behind the house. There are ruins left after several houses.

The picture was taken from a 1 km path around the old farm estate. Along the trail there are signs telling about the tracks can still be seen by businesses in the area.

EXHIBITION

300 YEARS VIENNA PORCELAIN MANUFACTURE

Wed, 16.05.2018-Sun, 23.09.2018

MAK EXHIBITION HALL

With the comprehensive anniversary exhibition 300 years of VIENNA PORCELAIN MANUFACTURE, the MAK sheds light on the history and significance of Europe's second oldest porcelain manufactory. Founded in May 1718 by awarding an imperial privilege to porcelain production to Claudius Innocentius Du Paquier, the Viennese porcelain manufactory set aesthetic standards in the following decades. Around 1,000 objects from the collections of the MAK and from national and international collections offer an impressive overview of Viennese developments in the context of Asian precursors and European competitors.

Since its founding years, the MAK preserves the estate of the imperial led from 1744, 1864 closed Vienna porcelain manufactory and is dedicated to the study of porcelain. With examples from all epochs of production, the estate gives an overview of around 150 years porcelain production in Vienna. The Viennese porcelain production covered a broad ceramic spectrum: from dinner service and vases to clocks, high-quality porcelain sculptures, scenic and floral miniatures, porcelain paintings with relief gold decoration and cobalt blue to large-scale porcelain paintings with floral still lifes.

For major works of the Viennese porcelain manufactory, such as the porcelain room from the Brno Palais Dubsky (c. 1740) or the centerpiece from the Abbey Zwettl (Vienna, 1767/68), the exhibition 300 Years of WIENER PORZELLANMANUFAKTUR provides the latest scientific findings with previously unpublished documents. Both the "Dubsky Room", one of the first rooms with European porcelain, and the centerpiece from Zwettl Abbey are permanently exhibited in the Baroque Rococo Classicism MAK Collection designed by Donald Judd.

AUSSTELLUNG

300 JAHRE WIENER PORZELLANMANUFAKTUR

MI, 16.05.2018–SO, 23.09.2018

MAK-AUSSTELLUNGSHALLE
