Couldn't resist heading up to Seattle when we found out the Cubs were going to be in town, plus the little 2 day midweek vacation was a nice break.

This is the game we originally planned on going to. Still in the upper deck cheap seats, but not bad.

Cubs managed to squeak out a win 3-2, after 13 freakin' innings. We were starting to worry that the game wouldn't be over before we had to catch the train home, even though I thought I had allowed for plenty of time.

What I found weird about these games is that Seattle baseball fans are really quiet. The only time they make noise is when the jumbotron tells them to, and the only time they get to their feet is during the national anthem and the seventh inning stretch. It's kind of baffling when I'm used to spending half the game on my feet and yelling when I'm at Wrigley. There were a hell of a lot of Cub fans at the game though (about a third of the crowd had on Cubbie blue, no exaggeration) and I think we made our presence known.

This was a really cool shot of the sun shining through the clouds down on the windward side of Hawaii. This was taken at the top of Mariner's ridge and represents some of the amazing things you can see in Hawaii. I think those two peaks (and a possible third hidden one) are called Olomana. Or at least I believe the Olomana trail climbs to those peaks. Also it's quite amazing but the farmland on the right side of the photo is behind the town of Waimanalo. I've driven through the town of Waimanalo over many years and I never had any idea so much farmland was behind it. This land must be tucked in the back of Waimanalo and only accessible to a few.

Several spacecraft were built for the Mariner Mars 1964 mission. The ones that were actually launched were referred to as Mariner C-2 and Mariner C-3 until they were renamed Mariner 3 and Mariner 4, respectively. There was also a Proof Test Model (PTM, or Mariner C-1) and a Structural Test Model (STM). This photo shows Mariner C-2 configured for system tests in May 1964. It appears to be in the Spacecraft Assembly Facility, with the observation area at the top of the photo.

Mariner 3 was launched November 5, 1964, but the shroud did not fully eject from the spacecraft, the solar panels did not deploy, and the batteries ran out of power. The problem was fixed on Mariner 4, which began its successful journey to Mars on November 28, 1964.

Documentation found in the Archives does not identify the purpose of the sphere covering the magnetometer during this test. (See the comments at beacon.jpl.nasa.gov/archives/date/2014/11# for more information about this 3-axis Helmholtz coil, which was used to null out Earth’s magnetic field in order to calibrate the magnetometer sensor.)

One of my favourites!. This quilt marks the transition from being a patchworker who quilts to finish a top, to a quilter, who pieces things to quilt. This top has been quilted to within an inch of its life. The red/yellow series was a fat quarter bundle, but the background fabric is an over-dye, because I couldn't get the shade of blue I wanted.

The mariner in petropavlovsk russia. There were more people from russia stopped to take pictures of the ship than passengers from the ship out taking pictures of russia. Real funny.

By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.

[1 Corinthians 3:10-15]

5 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW:

1. Like it or not, we are ALL sinners: As the Scriptures say, “No one is righteous—not even one. No one is truly wise; no one is seeking God. All have turned away; all have become useless. No one does good, not a single one.” (Romans 3:10-12 NLT)

2. The punishment for sin is death: When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned. (Romans 5:12 NLT)

3. Jesus is our only hope: But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. (Romans 5:8 NLT) For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23 NLT)

4. SALVATION is by GRACE through FAITH in JESUS: God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. (Ephesians 2:8-10 NLT)

5. Accept Jesus and receive eternal life: If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (Romans 10:9 NLT) But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. (John 1:12 NLT) And this is what God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God’s Son does not have life. (1 John 5:11-12 NLT)

Read the Bible for yourself. Allow the Lord to speak to you through his Word. YOUR ETERNITY IS AT STAKE!

„Ah! well a-day! what evil looks

Had I from old and young!

Instead of the cross, the Albatross

About my neck was hung.“

On December 14, 1962, useful scientific information was radioed to Earth from the vicinity of another planet for the first time. The unmanned Mariner 2 spacecraft, with its six scientific instruments, passed within 34,800 kilometers (21,600 miles) of Venus. Mariner 2 indicated that Venus is very hot and has no measurable magnetic fields or radiation belts. On the way to Venus, Mariner 2's instruments detected and measured the radiation, magnetic fields and dust of interplanetary space.

This spacecraft is on view in the Milestones of Flight Gallery of the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.

Made these a couple of years ago as a possible Father's Day present that never panned out. My dad played and later worked for the Seattle Mariners in the 80s, and later in his career worked for the Blue Jays, retiring just a year ago. These were my attempt at making mosaics of the team logos during the times he was with each team. I'm pretty happy with the Blue Jay, less so with the Mariner trident.

Mariner 10 Venus Mosaic (1973)

The Mariner’s Mirrour began as a groundbreaking Dutch atlas, but Anthony Ashley’s translation transformed it into an English book. The image on the title-page shows many tools of the mariner’s trade, from upward-oriented celestial instruments including quadrants and astrolabes to downward-oriented lead lines that were used to measure the depth of a harbor. The English edition also places the English nation at the center of the maritime world by mentioning Sir Francis Drake. The Folger’s hand-colored copy would presumably have been intended as a lavish gift, perhaps for one of the wealthy private families who helped underwrite English navigation.
