The Ancient Mariner
This statue was commissioned in 2002 by the Watchet Market House Museum Society.
It was sculpted by Alan B Herriot of Penicuik,Scotland and erected in 2003 as a tribute to Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
This renowned poet resided for some years at the nearby village of Nether Stowey. In 1797, whilst on a walking tour, Coleridge visited Watchet. On seeing the harbour he was inspired to compose one of ht best known poems in English literature,
"The Rime of the Ancient Mariner"
To become a ship's captain you have to be a skilled mathematician, also competent in physics and many other skills. In my own time training as a Second Officer in the Merchant Navy I came to admire the professionalism of those Masters, "Old Men" as they were respectfully called. I was surprised how many I encountered who were raised in the Highlands and Islands, from tiny islands like Barra, wondering how they could attain such education standards in the 'simple' communities on the fringe of the Scottish Islands.
Entering the Ardnamurchan lighthouse stables I saw an interesting face. In fact I was more drawn to the significance of his blazer and cap badges that seemed vaguely familiar to me. Perhaps it has been so long but I should have recognised the Merchant Navy style I first stitched to my own uniform 45 years ago. But this gentleman turned out to have been a Captain, a Master Mariner, no less, serving 45 years at sea himself from the age of 16 and now retired for 30 years. Captain Peterson of the Ben Line was one of seven Master Mariners to be produced by just one family. That's some massive achievement, easily recognised by someone like me who only attained the training level of Second Officer. We chatted over old times pre-computerisation and satnav and days of astro-navigation, sun and star sights, spherical trigonometry, log haversines and sextants and the feeling ancient mariners get when they step on board for one last trip.
I just had to ask him for a casual portrait snap in the dim light inside the lighthouse.
Mariner's Fall
Ocean Road
The walk to the Mariner's Falls is officially closed by I was joined on a weekend by some locals walking their dogs on their way to these falls which have been the subject of many tree falls. Approaching the falls you make your way through almost an archway of fallen trees. I had this manipulation in mind when shooting the frames required for this shot (12 in total for polarisation, dynamic range and focus).
We have some newish stuff appearing on our website too so check out the links below!
The American Mariner freighter making it's way into Lorain this evening, just after sunset. My wife's photos came out much better, as she was there before me. I came right after work and just barely caught it.

Meant to post this on Monday to mark the anniversary, but had a migraine so spent whole evening in a dark room avoiding any light. Anyway, here it is.
On November 14th 1971 NASA's Mariner 9 reached Mars, becoming the first spacecraft to orbit another planet. After dust storms that lasted several months following its arrival, the orbiter managed to send back clear pictures of the surface. Mariner 9 successfully returned 7,329 images over the course of its mission, which concluded in October 1972.
The Mariner 9 model is based on a design by phreaddee on Rebrickable and can be downloaded for free, here:

Mars is my creation, which I'm pretty pleased with tbh!
a bit of trust and faith needed to enter the cave because you can't see the inside until you swim under the tunnel. going out was much easier because you could see the outside light
This is the Mariners' church in downtown Detroit. It was built in 1849 in the Gothic Revival style. Its original location was at the northwest corner of Woodward Avenue and Woodbridge. It was moved to its current location in 1955 to make room for the Civic Center plaza. It is built of limestone. It was immortalized in the song "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot in 1975.
