Personally, I'm OK with the iPhone storing information about where I've been. It's not like I'm not already tweeting about it, uploading photos to Flickr, reviewing things on Tripadvisor and so on...
When a county is first loaded a ‘Footprint’ of the raster file subsets are created representing the extents of each raster. Each square is a polygon which can be searched for in a Spatial query. Only the raster files that are needed to cover the visible portions of the map will be loaded.
Digital Progression created a series of maps for Eurostar stations in London, Paris, Brussels and Lille.

I normally walk into town but I want to have enough energy to enjoy myself there and I might as well get a return ticket to bring back some groceries.
This map is a smaller and more detailed scale portion of this map.
This system, built in the fifties, was truly gigantic:
- 56 launching sites arranged into two rings, 170 and 100 kilometers in diameter (marked red);
- 7 supply bases (marked orange);
- 4 close range warning radars forming 50 km ring (marked blue).
