The backpack pushes my shoulders into a slump, my eyes lifting wearily from the ground ahead of me to meet the bursts of orange that blankets the earth. I gasp slightly, and adjust my eyes to this new hue.
The seeds of the Red Maple (Acer rubrum) appear in the early spring. Great Dismal Swamp, Jericho Lane, Suffolk, Virginia.
I took a trip out to Lost Maples to see the foliage. Unfortunately, Mother Nature wasn't the most cooperative this year, and the colors weren't as great as when I had visited 4 years ago. It was still great to see some color and to be outdoors!

In the Charles Sauriol Conservation Area, along the Don Valley trails, there's a small clearing, in the midst of which stands this majestic maple. Its brilliant yellow leaves -- half on the tree, and half on the ground -- made the whole area glow golden.
Grows to 50' tall by 40' wide. This hybrid of Silver and Red Maples combines the best qualities of both! Quite rapid growing for a hardwood tree. Green leaves turn to brilliant shades of orange and red in the fall. Grows best in full sun.
