Thaipusam actually celebrates the birthday of the Hindu deity Subramaniam. On this occasion, Hindus show the sincerity of their faith. It is a time for making and fulfilling vows. Devotees pray for divine help and make vows. When their prayers are answered, they fulfil their vows.
To do this, a devotee would pierce his cheeks, tongue, face or other suitable body parts with sharp objects. Next his friends or relatives load a *kavadi on his shoulder. Finally, in a trance-like manner, he goes on a 4km journey of faith.
Others, including young children, might join the procession carrying only milk pots. The Thaipusam Singapore procession starts at the Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple on Serangoon Road and ends at the Sri Thandayuthapani Temple on Tank Road.
At first look, one might think that the festival starts at one temple and ends at another. Not so. Many of the devotees start fasting a month before the Thaipusam Singapore festivities. Others fast a week. Yet others three days.
A Hindu friend said this to me, "If you are going to put a 12-inch skewer through your cheeks and a hundred spikes in your chest, you'd better take your fast seriously!"
* A kavadi is a cage-like structure carried by devotees during the Thaipusam Festival.
It is traditionally decorated with peacock feathers and aluminium plates which show images of Hindu deities. Sharp spikes criss-cross its lower section.
An elaborate kavadi might weigh up to 15kg! It is quite something just to lift it. But these chaps I saw actually walked with them for 4km - kavadis, skewers, hooks, spikes and all!
Some of them even skipped and danced with their kavadis. Either they have great endurance or they have some supernatural help.

Wat Sothon Wararam Worawihan
I visited this magnificent Temple June 10th 2010 when I spent a whole day in Chachoengsao province. First port of call was this Temple, it was amazing to see a whole community surrounding this Temple’s grounds, selling all manner of artefacts associated with religion. There was a section that had Thai traditional dancing and the dancers were dressed in Thai costumes as you can see from the pictures.
What is interesting is that when you walk round this temple you think it a normal Thai temple until you arrive at the rear of the premises and then you will find a beautiful Chinese temple built in the grounds here. With a large colonial style building next to it. It adds interest to this temple for any visitors.
This temple is in the municipal area by the Bang Pakong River. Built in late Ayutthaya Period, with its original name of Wat Hong, it is the location of Phra Phutthasothon or Luang Pho Sothon, this important Buddha statue in meditation with a width of 1.65 metres and a height of 1.48 metres high. According to the legend, this Buddha had been floated along the river, before being placed here at this temple. The original statue was a beautiful Buddha image, but later on cement was placed on it to prevent it from being stolen.
The present chapel ( ubosot ) is a new, beautiful, and enormous building which has replaced the old one. The chapel actually depicts the style of the Rattanakosin period. The opening hours are from 07:00 am to 16:15 hrs. weekdays and 07:00 am to 17:00 hrs. at weekends. Additionally, there are many stalls for food and local souvenirs. A long-tailed boat service to and from the city market and the temple is also available.
Suan Somdet Phra Srinagarindra Park Chachoengsao The park is dedicated to the memory of the mother of the King of Thailand. It is located in front of the Provincial hall, near the town centre. There is a large lagoon at its centre surrounded by a path and shady trees. It is a popular recreation facility for local residents. There is not much to see here in the way of landscaped gardens but it does provide a quiet corner to sit and have a picnic during lunch hour.
