On Tuesday, May 7, 2019, EOP hosted a recognition reception for its graduating seniors. At the event students had the chance to to connect with their peers and they also received a commemorative EOP graduation sash, a small token from their "EOP family" to publicly acknowledge their hard work and dedication. This year marks the 50 years of the Educational Opportunity Program and we have commemorated this special occasion with our special edition “EOP 50 years” sash. The sash is a representation of not only the success of our students but the program’s 50 years of changing lives through continuous innovation. We can’t wait to see our graduating students wear it proudly during CSUN’s commencement ceremonies.

Attending the event were also former EOP students receiving their post graduate degree, who were honored with a medal.

Congratulations class of 2019, you are Making A Difference!

Cynthia Kersey's sensational Unstoppable Foundation Gala fundraiser for building schools in Africa - changing lives and countries through education was the perfect place to first meet Women's Leadership Academy Host Kelly O'Neill in person. I'd attended her 2 week summit virtually and learned from amazing speakers! The room was full of amazing people who lift up the planet with their work and their hearts. I'm a matchmaker in Scottsdale Arizona and I've begun introducing single men and women in southern California! I want to have a second home in Santa Monica...just putting that out there! Anyone live on the water and need someone to look after their house when they travel while I get my 22 year matchmaking service launched there? I'm keeping Phoenix offices where I know 70,000 people. Many who'd be open to meeting someone extraordinary to fall in love with in California.

Congratulations to our high potential EOP students on their completion of their residential bridge experience. Our convocation took place on Sunday, December 4, 2016. Back in the summer of 2015, most of these students were admitted to our campus by EOP as "special-admit" freshmen. This means that CSU rejected these students due to their low grades in high school, but EOP leaders recognized their high potential. For a summer plus three semesters, EOP leaders provided support services, especially mentors, to help these students develop their potential. Now several are young scholars on our campus.

The Backpack Community Tour (www.backpackers.co.za) starts with a visit to the Bo-Kaap, including the infamous Atlas Trading. Then we head to the District 6 Museum, before having lunch at the Eastern Food Bazaar in Darling Street.

After lunch we go to Heideveld, where the GCU Academy is based at Woodlands Primary School. Here you will have the opportunity to play soccer with the kids, help them with their homework or read to them, whilst seeing what the GCU (www.gcu.org.za) is about and how they are making big changes.

Solar Water Disinfection "SODIS"

ICROSS with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland has carried out extensive research on

solar disinfection of drinking water. Our findings suggest that solar disinfection of water may

significantly reduce morbidity in communities with no other means of disinfecting drinking

water, because of lack of resources or in the event of a disaster.
