Celebrating our amazing EOP Class of 2023! We take great pride in recognizing the remarkable journeys of our exceptional students. Did you know that some of our brightest minds began their CSUN adventure as special admits? EOP leaders saw their immense potential beyond high school grades and with mentoring and support these individuals blossomed into successful college graduates!

Let's also take a moment to honor and celebrate those who were part of our EOP Resilient Scholars Program, designed to provide unwavering support to former foster youth throughout their academic pursuit. These resilient individuals have proven time and again that they are true overachievers, surpassing all expectations along their journey.

As we bid farewell to the EOP Class of 2023, we couldn't be prouder of their remarkable accomplishments and unwavering determination.

On Tuesday, May 7, 2019, EOP hosted a recognition reception for its graduating seniors. At the event students had the chance to to connect with their peers and they also received a commemorative EOP graduation sash, a small token from their "EOP family" to publicly acknowledge their hard work and dedication. This year marks the 50 years of the Educational Opportunity Program and we have commemorated this special occasion with our special edition “EOP 50 years” sash. The sash is a representation of not only the success of our students but the program’s 50 years of changing lives through continuous innovation. We can’t wait to see our graduating students wear it proudly during CSUN’s commencement ceremonies.

Attending the event were also former EOP students receiving their post graduate degree, who were honored with a medal.

Congratulations class of 2019, you are Making A Difference!

Solar Water Disinfection" SODIS

ICROSS with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland has carried out extensive research on

solar disinfection of drinking water. Our findings suggest that solar disinfection of water may

significantly reduce morbidity in communities with no other means of disinfecting drinking

water, because of lack of resources or in the event of a disaster.

ICROSS, with funding from the Global Fund, has a home based care programme where 170 volunteers care for terminally ill aids patients. ICROSS is in charge of the training of the community health workers (CHVs) and distribution of prophylaxis and nutritional supplements among other things. We quickly realised the stigma and discrimination our volunteers met, both external and internal. After close dialogue with a number of volunteers, a comprehensive stigma and discrimination workshop was tailored. The workshop was incorporated into a refresher course for our CHVs on home based care.

March marks the anniversary of the passing of beloved EOP Director, José Luis Vargas. Three years after his passing, he continues to be missed and remembered by the CSUN EOP community.

Mr. Vargas led EOP with passion, conviction, and professionalism. He mentored thousands of students and uplifted them to believe in themselves and succeed in higher education. The program's mission will continue through the dedication and hard work of its leaders, staff, and most of all our EOP students.

Over the course of 4 days, May 15-18, volunteers from Qualcomm, local residents, business owners, and artists will converge in the alleyways to take part in their transformation by painting murals, installing signage, marking pathways, installing lights, weeding and planting, and a variety of other designs as determined by the community. This event will culminate into a series of block parties in each project location, featuring music, food, and guest speakers.

Our Singapore team rolled up their sleeves, braved the heat and give back to the community by spending a day picking up litter - cigarette butts, plastic utensils, plastic bottle, lids, etc…) and record what they've collected. and how you could help while doing nothing

Traditionally trial and error has been the only way to produce improved strains of rice by cross-breeding easily observable traits. Now computers are being harnessed to target the best candidates based on the more subtle characteristics of individual proteins.

The goal of this project is not genetic modification, in fact it is the opposite. The information will be used by traditional breeders to make their search more productive. And as the results are in the public domain, the outcome will be better crops rather than patents.

Each yellow dot in the picture is a completed computation – you can see there's a lot of work to do before the whole picture turns yellow

BIG THANK YOU AND CHEERS for all the Amazing Secret Angels – together we have contributed 17 years, 291 days and 23 hours of run time

***************************************************************************************************

The Amazing Secret Angels are a group of flickr photographers who volunteer our background computer power to humanitarian research. Together our individual contributions are making a big difference in areas such as cancer, AIDS and world hunger.

The system works by using spare capacity on our computers to process secure raw data and then returns results to a central server. Everything is handled automatically by a small piece of software provided by the World Community Grid charity – you simply download it and it takes care of itself. You may have heard of SETI@home, this works in the same way but looking for answers rather than aliens.

The widget works in the background using only spare capacity and gives priority to whatever else is running, so it only runs when there are resources that nothing else needs. At this moment for example, what you're doing is browsing the internet and that ties up hardly any computer resources at all, leaving lots of capacity that the widget could be ‘mopping up’.

When you add together all the time that everyone wastes on flickr, that's a lot of mopping up! Even with the smallest of individual contributions, together we can make more of a difference than the largest computer in the world – that is what is truly Amazing.

We're looking forward to saying "Hey there, welcome to the group!"

***************************************************************************************************

Step-by-step guide to getting started

1) Go to the download page here

.... a. You’ll be asked to choose a username

.... b. Select the projects you want to contribute to

.... c. Click the download button

2) Afterwards, on the World Community Grid website it's easy to join our team

.... a. Go to your home page entitled My Grid

.... b. In the side-menu select My Team and then Find A Team

.... c. Please type ‘The Amazing Secret Angels’ and click the button Join This Team

Jennifer and Eric Simon, Grace's parents, take a moment to review the projects they've seen on the final presentation date for projects of an EECS 481 course in the Bob and Betty Beyster Building atrium on December 11, 2013.

EECS 481 Students in EECS Professor David Chesney's course have been designing systems to make it easier for Grace Simon to communicate, play, or be more independent at school or home.

Simon was diagnosed with cerebal palsy at six months old. While Grace doesn't have the muscle control to speak, extensively sign, or walk, she has a very capable mind that can read and communicate by signaling 'yes' or 'no.'

This is the last weekend that Lauren will be downtown Chicago standing with a whiteboard on Michigan Avenue. Her plan is to be there through January 1st. and you can find her from noon until 4 pm.

This was taken the second time that I met Lauren with her whiteboard and I can tell you that she is passionate, warm and a huge inspiration.

Be sure to follow her on her blog to see what's next for thegirlwiththewhiteboard. My guess is that it's going to be something amazing!!

Best wishes to you in 2012 and beyond, Lauren! I know that you are going to continue to make a difference in our world!!

Oh, I just wanted to add that Lauren was featured on our local ABC station!
