The inchworm, also known as “inch worm”, is the larva of the moth family Geometridae. The inch worm, although cute, is considered a garden pest.

“Friendship is the hardest thing in the world to explain. It's not something you learn in school. But if you haven't learned the meaning of friendship, you really haven't learned anything.”

Philippines, Luzon, Mt. Makiling

Importance -- The oak timberworm is a major cause of defect and degrade in the red and white oaks in the East. Attacks are most commonly associated with wounds on mature trees.

Identifying the Insect -- Adults are brownish black, brentid weevils about 1 to 1.4 inches (25 to 35 mm) long. The female has a narrow snout, while the male's mouth-parts are broad and flattened. The larvae are white, elongate, cylindrical, and curved.

Identifying the Injury -- Attacks usually occur at blazes, around other borer entrances, and other wounds that expose the sapwood. White, powdery frass at egg sites on exposed wood is good evidence of infestation. Winding tunnels .1 inch or smaller (0.2 to 3 mm) in diameter, characterize damage in lumber.

Biology -- During spring and early summer, females chew cylindrical holes into the sapwood and lay single eggs. Eggs hatch in a few days and the larvae bore almost through the tree then "U-turn" back across the grain to the point of origin. Pupation occurs in the gallery, and adults emerge through circular holes near the egg site. The life cycle requires 2 to 3 years.

Control -- Trees should be protected from wounds and injuries, including other borer attacks to largely prevent infestation by the oak timberworm.

Ayala Greenfield Estates is a magical neighborhood that provides residents with a true sanctuary to come home to everyday. With priceless views of Mount Makiling, Laguna de Bay, Tagaytay Ridge, and the Metro Manila cityscape, Ayala Greenfield Estates also has first-class recreational amenities, including its very own 18-hole, par 72 championship golf course.

A community that works around nature rather than suppresses it, this 350-hectare development serves as the habitat of 35 species and 21 families of endemic and migratory birds. The flora provides a magnificent backdrop to any family scene, and the cool mountain breezes comfort both body and mind.

Tayak Hill is located in small town of Rizal, Laguna. The view on the peak is very rewarding. The summit, marked by 2 crosses (a wooden and a concrete with white paint), was very windy and offers a great view of the whole western Laguna. Mountains, lakes and town were all seen from top. You can see the Malipunyo Range, Mts. Kalisungan and Makiling, the slopes of Mt. Cristobal, part of Laguna de Bay and the city of San Pablo complete with it's 7 lakes. Tayak Hill served as the command post of the Filipino-American Irregular Troops under a certain Col. Gertrudo San Pedro during World War II.

It is this time of the year when kapok also referred to as cotton-like fluff obtained from seed pods spreads across the University of the Philippines at Los Baños.

Ceiba pentandra is a tropical tree of the order Malvales and the family Malvaceae (previously separated in the family Bombacaceae), native to Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, northern South America, and (as the variety C. pentandra var. guineensis) to tropical west Africa. A somewhat smaller variety is found throughout southern Asia and the East Indies. Kapok is the most used common name for the tree and may also refer to the cotton-like fluff obtained from its seed pods. The tree is cultivated for the seed fibre, particularly in south-east Asia, and is also known as the Java cotton, Java kapok, silk-cotton, samauma, or ceiba.

The tree grows to 240 ft (73 m), as confirmed by climbing and tape drop[7] with reports of Kapoks up to 252 feet (77 meters)[8] Trunks can often be up to 3 m (9.8 ft) in diameter above the extensive buttress roots. The very largest individuals, however, can be 19 feet (5.8 meters) thick or more above the buttresses.

The buttress roots can be clearly seen in photographs extending 40 to 50 feet (12 to 15 meters) up the trunk of some specimens[12] and extending out from the trunk as much as 65 feet (20 meters) and then continuing below ground to a total length of 165 feet (50 meters). Sampaloc Lake - San Pablo City - Laguna, Philippines.

The silhouette of Mount San Cristobal gracefully lines the colorful sky and is reflected on the still waters of Sampaloc Lake, one of the 7 craters lake for which San Pablo City is famed for. San Pablo City, or the City of Seven Lakes, is located 70 kilometers south of Manila in the Laguna province. The city is nestled in the foothills of three mountains namely Mount Banahaw, Mount Makiling and the Sierra Madre Mountains.

It is this time of the year when kapok also referred to as cotton-like fluff obtained from seed pods spreads across the University of the Philippines at Los Baños.

The commercial tree is most heavily cultivated in the rainforests of Asia, notably in Java (hence its nicknames), the Philippines, Malaysia, and Hainan Island in China, as well as in South America.

The flowers are an important source of nectar and pollen for honey bees and bats.

Bats are the primary pollinators of the night-blooming flowers.

Native tribes along the Amazon River harvest kapok fibre to wrap around their blowgun darts. The fibres create a seal that allows the pressure to force the dart through the tube.

Kapok fibre is light, very buoyant, resilient, resistant to water, but it is very flammable. The process of harvesting and separating the fibre is labour-intensive and manual. It is difficult to spin, but is used as an alternative to down as filling in mattresses, pillows, upholstery, zafus, and stuffed toys such as teddy bears, and for insulation. It was previously much used in life jackets and similar devices until synthetic materials largely replaced the fibre. The seeds produce an oil that is used locally in soap and can be used as fertilizer. Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ceiba_pentandra

In Philippine Mythology, in Mount Makiling in Laguna, Philippines lives Maria Makiling, a diwata or lambana (fairy or forest nymph). She is the most widely known diwata in Philippine Mythology. Maria Makiling is the guardian spirit of the mountain, responsible for protecting its bounty and thus, is also a benefactor for the townspeople who depend on the mountain's resources. In addition to being a guardian of the mountain, some legends also identify Laguna de Bay - and the fish caught from it - as part of her domain.

It is often said that Mount Makiling resembles the profile of a woman, said to be Maria herself. This phenomenon is described as true from several different perspectives, so there is no single location associated with this claim. The mountain's various peaks are said to be Maria's face and two breasts, respectively, and her hair cascades downwards a gentle slope away from her body.

Heliconia chartacea is a herbaceous plant, with paired large oblong leaves like those of the banana. It can grow to 7–8 m in height, and plants can form large clumps with age. The flowering stems are pendulous. The bright pink color of the flower bracts is rare among heliconias, making it very easy to identify. The conspicuous pink part of the large and showy hanging inflorescences is actually the waxy bracts, (modified leaves), with the small green true flowers half-hidden inside. It has blue-black fruits that contain 3 very hard seeds, which are capable of extended dormancy in the soil. The fruits are eaten by a variety of birds, including tanagers and thrushes.
