It is this time of the year when when kapok also referred to as cotton-like fluff obtained from seed pods spreads across the University of the Philippines at Los Baños.
Ceiba pentandra is a tropical tree of the order Malvales and the family Malvaceae (previously separated in the family Bombacaceae), native to Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, northern South America, and (as the variety C. pentandra var. guineensis) to tropical west Africa. A somewhat smaller variety is found throughout southern Asia and the East Indies. Kapok is the most used common name for the tree and may also refer to the cotton-like fluff obtained from its seed pods. The tree is cultivated for the seed fibre, particularly in south-east Asia, and is also known as the Java cotton, Java kapok, silk-cotton, samauma, or ceiba.
The tree grows to 240 ft (73 m), as confirmed by climbing and tape drop[7] with reports of Kapoks up to 252 feet (77 meters)[8] Trunks can often be up to 3 m (9.8 ft) in diameter above the extensive buttress roots. The very largest individuals, however, can be 19 feet (5.8 meters) thick or more above the buttresses.
The buttress roots can be clearly seen in photographs extending 40 to 50 feet (12 to 15 meters) up the trunk of some specimens[12] and extending out from the trunk as much as 65 feet (20 meters) and then continuing below ground to a total length of 165 feet (50 meters). Mount Makiling, or Mount Maquiling, is a dormant volcano located on the border of Laguna province and Batangas on the island of Luzon, Philippines. The mountain rises to an elevation of 1,090 m (3,580 ft) above mean sea level and is the highest feature of the Laguna Volcanic Field. The volcano has no recorded historic eruption but volcanism is still evident through geothermal features like mud spring and hot springs. South of the mountain is the Makiling-Banahaw Geothermal Plant. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) classifies the volcano as potentially active.
Mount Makiling is a state-owned forest reserve administered by the University of the Philippines Los Baños. Prior to its transfer to the university, the mountain was the first national park of the Philippines. Mount Makiling National Park was established on February 23, 1933 by Proclamation No. 552. However, it was decommissioned as a national park on June 20, 1963 by Republic Act no. 3523 when it was transferred to the University for use in forestry education and information.[2]
The mountain is sacred to many pilgrims and is widely believed to be the home of an anito named Maria Makiling. It is one of the most known bundok dambanas in Calabarzon. It was declared as an ASEAN Heritage Park in 2013, with the title of "Mount Makiling Forest Reserve. Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Makiling

These are the front eyes of the Jumping Spider (there are a total of 8 eyes). Shooting this close is very hard since this tiny spider moves a lot and focusing is too critical. I shot 5 photos up this close and four of which were blurred.

A dragonfly is a type of insect belonging to the order Odonata, the suborder Epiprocta or, in the strict sense, the infraorder Anisoptera. It is characterized by large multifaceted eyes, two pairs of strong transparent wings, and an elongated body. Dragonflies are similar to damselflies, but the adults can be differentiated by the fact that the wings of most dragonflies are held away from, and perpendicular to, the body when at rest. Even though dragonflies possess 6 legs like any other insect, they are not capable of walking.
Dragonflies are valuable predators that eat mosquitoes, and other small insects like flies, bees, ants, and butterflies. They are usually found around lakes, ponds, streams and wetlands because their larvae, known as "nymphs", are aquatic.

Pentatomoidea is a superfamily of insects in the Heteroptera suborder of the Hemiptera order, which are commonly referred to as shield bugs or stink bugs. Shield bugs have glands in their thorax between the first and second pair of legs which produce a foul smelling liquid. This liquid is used defensively to deter potential predators and is sometimes released when the bugs are handled carelessly. The distinctive smell comes from aldehydes such as CH3–(CH2)2–CH=CH–CHO, and is chemically similar to pheromones.
The nymphs, similar to adults except smaller and without wings, also have stink glands.
The nymphs and adults have piercing mouthparts which most use to suck sap from plants, although some eat other insects. When they group in large numbers they can become significant pests.

It is this time of the year when kapok also referred to as cotton-like fluff obtained from seed pods spreads across the University of the Philippines at Los Baños.
The commercial tree is most heavily cultivated in the rainforests of Asia, notably in Java (hence its nicknames), the Philippines, Malaysia, and Hainan Island in China, as well as in South America.
The flowers are an important source of nectar and pollen for honey bees and bats.
Bats are the primary pollinators of the night-blooming flowers.
Native tribes along the Amazon River harvest kapok fibre to wrap around their blowgun darts. The fibres create a seal that allows the pressure to force the dart through the tube.
Kapok fibre is light, very buoyant, resilient, resistant to water, but it is very flammable. The process of harvesting and separating the fibre is labour-intensive and manual. It is difficult to spin, but is used as an alternative to down as filling in mattresses, pillows, upholstery, zafus, and stuffed toys such as teddy bears, and for insulation. It was previously much used in life jackets and similar devices until synthetic materials largely replaced the fibre. The seeds produce an oil that is used locally in soap and can be used as fertilizer. Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ceiba_pentandra

After nine years of creating lumen prints where I first learned about the art here in Flickr back in 2013, I finally had my first ever art exhibit! Heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Jerry Y. Yapo, Director, UPLB Office for Initiatives in Culture and Arts, for believing in me and giving me a chance to present my first ever art exhibit. Entitled Blooms, it features lumen prints of endemic and other Philippine flora. Exhibit runs till August 5, 2022 at the UPLB Sining Makiling Art Gallery.
Thank you so much Kuya Raymund Soberano for this beautiful write-up about my first ever art exhibit! globalnation.inquirer.net/204307/blooms-us-based-nurse-ho...

Importance -- The oak timberworm is a major cause of defect and degrade in the red and white oaks in the East. Attacks are most commonly associated with wounds on mature trees.
Identifying the Insect -- Adults are brownish black, brentid weevils about 1 to 1.4 inches (25 to 35 mm) long. The female has a narrow snout, while the male's mouth-parts are broad and flattened. The larvae are white, elongate, cylindrical, and curved.
Identifying the Injury -- Attacks usually occur at blazes, around other borer entrances, and other wounds that expose the sapwood. White, powdery frass at egg sites on exposed wood is good evidence of infestation. Winding tunnels .1 inch or smaller (0.2 to 3 mm) in diameter, characterize damage in lumber.
Biology -- During spring and early summer, females chew cylindrical holes into the sapwood and lay single eggs. Eggs hatch in a few days and the larvae bore almost through the tree then "U-turn" back across the grain to the point of origin. Pupation occurs in the gallery, and adults emerge through circular holes near the egg site. The life cycle requires 2 to 3 years.
Control -- Trees should be protected from wounds and injuries, including other borer attacks to largely prevent infestation by the oak timberworm.
