The token is surrendered as KSR ZDM-3 diesel-hydraulic 709 arrives at Kumarhatti Dagshai station with the Mail Express 52456, the 10:40 Shimla to Kalka Junction. The train will wait here for a Shimla bound service to cross before the token for the next section of its journey south is obtained.

Torrents of letters flowed along the post roads in the 1700s. But there were two problems - speed and security.
Post-boys who carried the mail were slow and often unreliable. Outside in all weathers, they were also an easy target for highwaymen, despite the threat of execution for thieves.
Theatre owner John Palmer regularly travelled overnight to London by stagecoach from Bath. He couldn't believe that it took two days to carry mail the same distance.
At Palmer's suggestion in 1784, smart new mail coaches replaced post-boys along key routes.
This idea transformed mail delivery.
This beautiful restored London - Bristol Mail Coach No. 105 from around 1800 is preserved at The Postal Museum in London.

An oldie from my days in BC when I was a journalism student and starting out shooting Nikon digital. These sled dog racing teams set out from Wells, BC, to deliver historic mail to Baskerville, BC. I believe this was 2005 or 2006.

I walked to the ridge to get the mail and met the mailman the other day.
I like the curve of the road by the mailbox.
The clouds were interesting also.
