A water spill on my black granite kitchen countertop yielded this fascinating image. The water magnified the reflected backsplash tiles and the white grouting. It even sharpened the focus.

Taken with my rental Laowa 60mm f/2.8 2x macro lens that I just purchased. Inexpensive and fun.

Rare sunlight. I'm ready for rain now.

Rented from www.Lensrentals.com. Used that company for years now. I have no connection with the distant company. FedEx works well.

Remember magnifying glasses from school? Still essential in lots of professions and jobs.

I loved this one as well :-)

This hands-free hanging magnifier belonged to my paternal grandparents. Van Waffle (Pappy) might have used it for looking at his stamp collection or Fern (Mimi) might have used it to read books and the newspaper. I felt closer to Pappy than my other three grandparents. He had been a self-made, successful business owner and a hard man by many accounts. I never saw that side of him. The year I was born he suffered a heart attack and retired. I guess it softened him. He had time for me. He remained active and did not have another heart attack until 20 years later when he died peacefully in his sleep, age 82. I've kept this magnifier since Mimi moved out of their house into a nursing home 30 years ago, knowing it would become useful someday. So far I have only used it two or three times to fix difficult knitting errors. Pappy would be puzzled to find me using it in fibrecraft, but he shared my enjoyment of gardening and storytelling.

Decided to take Usedfilm's GOYA idea to heart and stayed in Friday night to shoot. I also thought it might make an interesting addition to the most recent Strobist Challenge, not quite sure if it fits the bill or not though. 1 Sb-25 about 20 degrees off of camera center, up high and gelled to give a fluorescent tint (purposeful) at full power. A second sits below and is gridded at half power and throws a little light on the wall. Also about 40 different takes to get the the magnifying glass centered and focused properly.

NOTE: The powers that be at Flickr placed this photo into Flickr's "Explore" as one of the top 500 most interesting photos on a given day.

Have a great weekend!

The canonized Roman general Eustachius is the patron saint of this sacred building, which was built between 1532 and 1640. It is precisely from this point of view that the Gothic structure seems to be even stronger. However, if you look at the choir vault (magnifying glass) you will notice that the Gothic period is irretrievably over here.

The decoration of the pilasters and pillars with Ionic and Corinthic capitals also point the way to the Renaissance.
