This might be the most excited I have been about a project in a long time. As I was searching for things to do with my 5-year old for the summer, I ran across some business card sized magnets. I asked him if he wanted to draw pictures on cardstock that I would cut for him and we could place them on the magnets to give to people. Then the lightbulb went off...why don't I "draw" pictures on cardstock and make my own magnets?!!? I thought I could brighten up my 'fridge for the summer first, so this is my first set. I can see these being tucked into Get Well cards, Thinking of You cards, Thank You cards, Birthday cards....oh - I am excited...please excuse my dorkiness!

(I colored them with gel pens to give them some funkiness!)

I made these magnets using images from junk mail. They are for the B is for Bottle Caps swap I hosted at A Few of My Favorite Things.

Besides the actual causes and content of magnetic ribbons on cars, I've been watching where and how they are displayed. Here are some of the ones that I've found interesting.

First off we have the example with the yellow magent on the side of the green truck. For side viewing, this is a pretty good display - color selection, etc. It caught my eye.

The next two examples show a magnet draped over something. It is almost like the owner is afraid that the magnet will fall off. (I think I've actually seen one image of a magnet that managed to fall off a car - in a carwash!) So it is not clear if this is in response to a real or just percieved threat of the magnet falling off. These two examples show the keyhole and rear window wiper blade options - there are others out there.

Our third example is shows a double "ribbon tail" display. There seem to be a number of cars that were not designed with enough of a vertical metal surface on the back to hold a magnet. In response to this design flaw, magnet owners have resorted to putting the magnet on top of the trunk, with only the tail of the ribbon hanging over. (I did see a top of trunk only example, but failed to capture it!) Depending on the relative height of your car this can be a difficult display to determine the actual wording/cause of a magnet. I assume that drivers in big trucks have no such issues - which leads to our next example.

Flatbed trucks don't have a lot of vertical metal surface for affixing a magnet either.

One day in traffic I spotted this one. The magnet is actually on a metal plate - not the mud flap. (The usual warning about safety when engaged in taking pictures AND driving applies - this image was taken while traffic was fully stopped at a stop light.)

I have the feeling these magnets are actually much better aligned than the real houses in Amsterdam.

Grill Magnets are designed primarily for fitting in Hoppers for removal of small particles of ferrous metal from free-flowing powders and granular materials when processed. Magnetic Grills manufactured to any size or shape, they are simply placed in or below hoppers, in closed chutes, floor openings, catch bins, and other locations. Open Grate Magnets are available in round, square, and rectangular shapes to fit your equipment. These grids encased totally in stainless steel for rigorous handling are often used in hoppers in the plastics industry.

For an even higher level of protection, double and triple banked grids can be manufactured. All grids are available with either ferrite or powerful rare earth magnets that are recommended for fine ferrous particles such as rust etc.

Easily installable highly effective and consistent performance magnetic surfaces can be easily cleaned manually. Standard grids have 25mm (1 inch) mesh can be manufactured to any size or shape double or triple banked grids available. Powerful Rare Earth (Neodymium iron boron) magnets available for fine particles.

Monster Magnet is an American rock band. Hailing from Red Bank, New Jersey, the group was founded by Dave Wyndorf (vocals and guitar), John McBain (guitar) and Tim Cronin (vocals and drums).

Monster Magnet's style is heavily influenced by 1970s space rock such as Hawkwind, and proto-metal bands such as Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Blue Oyster Cult, Captain Beyond and Sir Lord Baltimore. In addition to recording covers such as Black Sabbath's "Into the Void" (Master of Reality, 1971) and Hawkwind's "Brainstorm" (Doremi Fasol Latido, 1972), Wyndorf sometimes incorporated elements of space rock staples into his own songs. For instance, the Dopes to Infinity title track borrows some of its lyrics from "Lord of Light" (ibid.), and Superjudge's "Twin Earth" is a reinterpretation of Captain Beyond's "Mesmerization Eclipse" (Captain Beyond, 1972). The main guitar riff to the track Dopes To Infinity is lifted from The Sir Lord Baltimore song "Woman Tamer" (Sir Lord Baltimore,1971). The band has also cited British new wave / post-punk band Depeche Mode as an influence on its music. They have also covered "Black Celebration" for a 1998 Depeche Mode tribute album.

This magnet uses symbolism and the power of stones to surround you with healing energy. Bloodstone is believed to be a powerful healing stone. The stone you see here is a deep green and red.

Butterflies are symbols of transformation and the butterfly sticker in this magnet invites you to transform into a being of beauty and health. The lining of this magnet is a green abstract watercolor with clockwise (sun-wise) spirals drawn in blue gel pen. The outside is wrapped with a green ribbon, green being a healing color. A powerful magnet is attached to the back.

Put this charming magnet on your refrigerator, in your bedroom, in your office or even in your car.

The magnet is 2” (5.8 cm) across and 1” (2.5) deep.

Another little dog magnet. To give you an idea of scale, he's about an inch tall.

Modified 17-inch black and white cathode-ray tube television set and magnet

By 1963 Paik had experimented with several techniques for disrupting TV images. He only began to use magnets after the ‘Exposition of Music – Electronic Television’. He especially appreciated how easy it was to distort TV images using magnets: it did not require technical skills or contact with internal components. Paik also made some interactive versions where members of the public could move the magnet over the TV set.

Nam June Paik

(October 2019 – February 2020)

The visionary artist who embraced mass media and new technology

Nam June Paik’s experimental, innovative, yet playful work has had a profound influence on today’s art and culture. He pioneered the use of TV and video in art and coined the phrase ‘electronic superhighway’ to predict the future of communication in the internet age.

This major exhibition is a mesmerising riot of sights and sounds. It brings together over 200 works from throughout his five-decade career – from robots made from old TV screens, to his innovative video works and all-encompassing room-sized installations such as the dazzling Sistine Chapel 1993.

Born in South Korea in 1932, but living and working in Japan, Germany and the US, Paik developed a collaborative artistic practice that crossed borders and disciplines. The exhibition looks at his close collaboration with cellist Charlotte Moorman. It also highlights partnerships with other avant-garde artists, musicians, choreographers and poets, including John Cage, Merce Cunningham and Joseph Beuys.

Like a magnet, the promise of brew pubs and delicious things drew me across the Willamette to Portland's Inner Eastside during my 11 hour layover on this Sunday.

In this gorgeously industrial neighborhood, I found a plethora of amazing sour beers, some tasty non-sours, and the pleasant surprise of three distilleries within walking distance. Somehow I still managed to get a few photos and make it back to for my flight on time... I could walk through this area for days without running out of interesting scenes (or interesting beers). I can't wait to continue the tour and take a few more photos next weekend. :)

Unfortunately, the magnet shop was closed...
