an interesting family of flies these tachinids are - the bristles are impressive and the cross pattern of those on the face especially - not sure if those are interfrontal or frontorbital bristles, but they give this fly one of those faces that would make a scary halloween mask...

I found this seed cone while jogging around my area. The color is intriguing and I think it is the type of thing the vast majority of people would not notice. Hopefully close up it will generate some appreciation...ugly little cone or vibrant red piece of nature.
