10 centavos (AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D + Macro Extension Tubes)

A set of cheap macro extension tubes got delivered last week and I've been testing them out... more to come :)

SIFRNG Macro extenstion tubes - taken using ring no.3 & Tamron 18-250mm lens, am managing to get about 3 or 4 cm away from the subjects. I need to work out how to change the aperture before I add the tubes as I think for the leaf shots am working with about f/5.6 (apparently there is a trick you can do using the Dof preview to set the aperture before you add the tubes).

Its becoming very addictive!

One cricket eats it's fallen comrade's carcass.

Got a great op to shoot this guy starting to get to work on a yellow jacket he just caught. I was probably 2 inches away and being VERY careful to watch for him to strike at my fingers as I was focusing on him. He looked kinda mad!

This rather large moth was hanging out by our office. The wingspan is roughly 5-6 inches, which makes it rather large! The antennae are roughly 1/2 inch and beautiful in design.

This is the top of the fence - the ice crystals have formed in lines because of the grain in the wood, it seems.

Day 212 of an Unknown Number

"Chiaroscuro Puff"

So, I found this puff the other day, and was not sure what to do with it photographically. I thought it might be interesting in front of a macro lens with a very shallow depth of field. So, I did it. Not very interesting. Then it came to me that lighting it in a chiaroscuro style might salvage the image. Chiaroscuro is simply a description of a style of lighting in which there is a clear break between areas of light and darkness. In portraiture, it is commonly shown as a dark background, next to the lit part of the subject's face, then the shaded side, and lastly the lit part of the background. Very dramatic!! I found that when dealing with a piece of puff, it was not so easy to shade the shadowed part of our subject, as the fluff reflected much of the light hitting it, thereby causing it to overexpose. So, I snooted one speedlight directly above our subject, and simply shaded the camera-right side with a lens cap. For our second light, I hit another speedlight against the white background, and feathered it enough that it did not light the camera-left part of the frame. Lastly, I stuck an orange gel on the puff's light, and a blue gel on the background strobe. Double contrast! So....puffy. Thanks for drifting by!!

The red background is actually part of the plant itself (the pointsetta leaf) I placed the plant infront of a window, you can just about see the veins.

Day 310 of 365

"Portraits 310"

Today's portrait is once again brought to you by my macro extension tube. I don't know about you, but I am having fun! There is one medium-sized soft box at camera- left, lighting our little beans. Well, size is relative. As I've mentioned before, the depth of field is so shallow, as can be seen in this image. Because the extension tube disables the auto-focus feature, I focus by moving the camera back and forward, until the desired area is in focus. A little tedious, but with every movement, the image changes drastically. Is it just me, or does someone do a very poor job at sewing the beans together? You can totally see the seams! Thanks for having a coffee with me!
