I was going for "toe beans" which is what I remembered the Happy Caturday theme as being. I was wrong - it's "paws" which is great since the toe beans are out of focus. Actually, the only thing in focus is Mack's face but at least I didn't have to resort to an old photo of Jimmy.

Happy Caturday: Eyes of March

Thank you for visiting, and for your kind comments and faves. They are greatly appreciated!

This photo was taken four years ago with a CAMERA instead of a phone. Mack was looking good - even SOOC.

This photo was taken a couple days ago when I let both Jimmy and Mack out for just long enough to take a few photos. He's healing nicely and will get his sutures out tomorrow. In the end, it turns out all that all this drama was probably caused by a bug bite but then his inflammatory response went into overdrive and he developed the EGC lesions. He's been on steroids to fight the allergic response and has gained 1.5 pounds in about 2 weeks. Fingers crossed we don't have a budding diabetic on our hands!

This week's Happy Caturday them is "now and then". I took this photo of Mack this week with an actual camera. He is now over 17 years old and that shows mainly in the "lacey" look of his irises and the dark freckles on his nose and on the rims of his eyes. His face has become more angular as he loses fat and he stands with his elbows bent out because of osteoarthritis. He has lost his two cohorts, Jimmy and Ella.

Mack has strong opinions and a very loud voice. For so much of his life he has seemed dissatisfied - he wants to be out when he's in, he wants it to be warmer outside when he sniffs the cold air in the winter, he wants more food when he was on a diet... So when he sleeps in the sun - inside or out - or when he grooms in an open window on his perch, I'm filled with a peaceful feeling because at least for a moment, all is right in Mack's little world. This morning when I woke up it was still dark out and the first thing I saw as I stood up was Mack playing with his catnip fish toy. A happy, playful, content Mack was the perfect way to start the day.

Happy Caturday: Now and Then

This is one of the earliest photos of Mack that I posted on Flickr 13 years ago when I first joined. He and Jimmy were 4 years old and Ella was 6. They were all so young and healthy - in the prime of their lives. You can see that Mack was just starting to get the freckles that orange cats get as they age. That was a very happy time. The pets were young and healthy and I was starting a new hobby - photography. My cats were my perfect subjects and through them, I met friends from all around the world on Flickr.

Happy Caturday: Now and Then

Mack has wonderful ginger markings but the biggest contrast in colors can be found on his tail which is striped with both ginger and blond colors.

I love having my favorite group open for two days. I may post a second photo tomorrow.

Happy Caturday: patterns and paws

When I first got Mack as a kitten, I was relieved that he didn't have freckles as most ginger cats do. And then, about 10 years ago, he started developing a few freckles and I decided that since they were on Mack, I liked them after all (see post in the comments).

So for this week's Happy Caturday theme of "favorite part" I wanted a photo of Mack's freckles. I realize this isn't the best shot of them but the way his paws were framing his freckles was too cute.

Just a happy update, Mack hasn't had to wear his e-collar for the past week. No new lesions and since I think the unknown allergen is outside, I'm sort of relieved that the weather has turned so cold. Mack doesn't want to spend too much time outside.

Happy Caturday: Favorite part

In the last class of my technical training I managed to arrange a job during the holidays at a company with these huge Macks (must have been just after the middle ages) My first task was to take the main gearbox out of this monster. That was done through the cabin!! A real birth.

This truck was build in the USA, delivered to Canada and after the war left in Europe.

The Mack Reef Complex is a group of offshore rocks and reef habitat that is located 11miles south of Gold Beach, Oregon.

We took the tour of Keys Ranch at Joshua Tree National Park. Bill Keys was an early miner and rancher in the area. He lived on this property for over 60 years. The Park service acquired the ranch shortly after his death in 1969. It was said that the place was a "magnificent junk pile" because Keys collected trucks, cars, metal and wood pieces. He apparently never threw anything away and also collected stuff that others in the area left behind. The 1913 Mack Truck is one of several of his vehicles on his ranch.

The ranch and/or the area was used by Disney films several times during Keys lifetime. I watch some of the Wild Burros of the West in which Keys starred as an old prospector in 1960. This truck appears in the film and didn't look any better back then!

Mack brewery had a very nice range of beers, and I think I tasted them all onboard MS Nordnorge.. but I have no idea which of them is in the glass this time!

Sorry I've been absent from Happy Caturday recently. I've picked up quite a few Saturday shifts at work which makes it hard to post and comment. And now that the weather is gorgeous it's hard to sit at a computer after working in a basement.

Happy Caturday: Whiskers

I decided to go all out for Happy Caturday this week by taking a photo with my CAMERA instead of my phone. Because it was overcast, I used my fanciest lens which is 100mm f/2.8. My backyard is so tiny that even leaning against the side fence, I couldn't get all of Mack in the frame as well as the flowers behind him. Oh well, best laid plans...

Mack celebrates his 15th birthday today. He's spending the day outside. I think our neighbors almost consider him "homeless" because he's always outside but that is by choice. I used to wonder if Mack would have preferred being re-released after the animal control officer brought him, Jimmy and their mom into our practice. But then I remember just how much Mack loves a certain puffy comforter my mom gave us, his heated mat in winter, being inside when it rains, having doormen/doorwomen opening doors for him, serving him food on demand, freshening his water multiple times a day... He loves being outside when the weather is nice but he also likes the finer things in life.

I can now continue to reveal the competing images from the 2021 Sandwich Fair Competition.

These images continue the series from the Sandwich Fair, the biggest and the last county fair in the state of Illinois. Known simply as "The Fair" by locals, it was started in 1888 and is the oldest continually-operated county fair in Illinois as well.

Held the week after Labor Day, the Sandwich Fair can draw tens of thousands of visitors per day and is a photographer's delight.

It is the reason why my photography club, the Sandwich Photographic Society exists. Formed in 1986 to document every aspect of the 100th Sandwich Fair in 1987, SPS is now a Chicago Area Camera Club Association certified club.

SPS sponsors a "Sandwich Fair Challenge" every year a themed photographic competition open to all that consists of 10-15 categories with the only criteria being that all images need to be taken at the current year's Fair. Many of the images featured in this series were taken to fit these categories.

This image is of an antique Mack truck, part of the antique truck, firetruck, and tractor display inside the railroad tracks. (For those who have noticed, yes, "diesel" is spelled wrong. This is intentional. It's part of a joke one of my less-than-spelling-inclined friends did. A fan of Shaquille "Shaq Daddy Diesel" O'Neil, he always misspelled diesel wrong, even going so far as making it part his AOL screen name - Mack Daddy Diesal.)

Hood ornament on a 1962 Mack B95 Fire Truck

The owner of the truck uses it for promoting his local business (insurance). I couldn't find a shot I liked, so I went for my default photograph - the hood ornament. Apparently no one has done that before because he said, "what the heck are you taking a picture of?"

Later we discussed insurance.

I also just realized that this is the first bulldog hood ornament I've photographed. Yay!

BTW, I photographed a different, but similar truck a few years ago in a parade. See first comment.

Oh the shark, babe, has such teeth, dear

And it shows them pearly white

Just a jackknife has old Macheath, babe

And he keeps it outta sight

You know when that shark bites with his teeth, babe

Scarlet billows start to spread

Fancy gloves, though, wears old Macheath, babe

So there's never, never a trace o' red

Now, on the side walk

Ooh Sunday morning, ah, ah

Lies a body just oozin' life, eek!

An' someone's sneaking 'round the corner

Could that someone be Mack the Knife?

There's a tugboat, ah, ah, ah-ah

Down by the river, don't you know?

Where a cement bag's just a-droopin' on down

Oh, that cement is just, it's there for the weight, dear

Five'll get ya ten, old Mack he's back in town

Now did ya hear about Louie Miller?

He disappeared, babe

After drawin' out all his hard earned cash

And now Macheath, spends just like a sailor

Could it be our boy's done somethin' rash?

Na, na, Jenny Diver, ho ho, Suky Tawdry

Ooh, Miss Lotte Lenya and Lucy Brown

Oh, the line forms on the right, babe

Now that Mack, he's back in town

I said, Jenny Diver, whoa, Suky Tawdry

Look out to Miss Lotte Lenya and old Lucy Brown

Yes, that line forms on the right, babe

Now that Mack, he's back in town

Look out old Mack, he is back!

My lovely sweet Mack suddenly developed severe breathing difficulties today and, in spite of getting him to the vet within 15 mins, died a couple of hours later. He had only been with me 11 months following his rescue from a really bad situation. I wish he had a longer time to enjoy life. Goodbye Mack.
