Douglas MacArthur (1880-1964) was an American military leader who served as General of the Army for the United States, as well as a field marshal to the Philippine Army. He played a prominent role in the Pacific theater during World War II, and was the Commander-in-Chief of the United Nations Command during the Korean War. MacArthur was also the 13th Chief of Staff of the Army from 1930 to 1935. He was known for his controversial leadership style and his famous quote "I shall return".

This is another image that I promised myself to find, someday. I have been trying to shoot those "someday" places in-between other projects and some of these places really turn out to be worth the effort. Well, I suppose there are the ones that the fun of the exploration exceeds the charm of the final result, too, haha.
Anyway, this is the north side of the General Douglas MacArthur Tunnel in the Presidio, San Francisco. It almost looks the same from the other side. One fun thing to think about is that there is a golf course on top of the tunnel.
I hope you found this look at a very, very busy San Francisco landmark interesting. You ever wonder how many times you drove through it? Thanks for coming by!

This explanatory sign is located around the middle of Nakada(中田) and Tateba(立場) on Chogo Kaido Road(長後街道).
In 1945, at the end of the Pacific War, General MacArthur landed at the Atsugi Air Base for the invasion of Japan. He took the Chogo Kaido Road to the Hotel New Grand in Yokohama.
He took a break here on the way and quenched his thirst with the well water of a greengrocery store that was there. Then the well came to be called MacArthur's Well. The well is no longer in use now.
